Dancing with the Stars Recap

Welcome back, dance fans! Have you all recovered from last week's premiere extravaganza? Or are you still trying to get the images of Billy Ray Cyrus stomping around out of your minds? This week, the couples tackled the mambo and the quickstep and the judges' scores will be combined with last week's numbers for a total of 60 possible points. Along with the viewer votes, the magic Dancing with the Stars math will be applied and someone will be going home. Which is really the part we all secretly (or not so secretly) love. Who danced up a storm? Who fizzled out? Read on for the full recap!

1) Apolo and Julianne started off the night with a fantastic quickstep to the Phil Collins tune "Two Hearts". Apolo and Julianne seem to be a great match, but I wonder if they can sustain the energy for the entire season? I think his Olympic training can only help in this regard. They got the show off to a great start, wowing the judges and the audience. They earned a 26 out of 30 for their quickstep; for a combined total score of 47 out of 60.

2) Shandi and Brian were up next with their mambo, and while they looked cute, I found it really hard to get excited about their performance. It felt very out of sync and I'm not sure the former Miss USA has hit her stride yet. The question is, will she be around long enough to get a chance to do so? The judges were mixed as well, giving the couple a total of 20 points for the night; 39 out of 60 for a combined total.

3) Next up, Clyde and Elena danced the quickstep to "Your Love is Lifting me Higher". It was a nice routine, but nothing amazing. I felt sort of bad because I want to like Clyde more than I actually do. Still, he seemed to have fun and his enthusiasm goes a long way in selling the dance. Bruno says he moved much better this week but still has a long way to go. Len mentioned that being very tall could be a problem when trying to keep the hold, contact and posture. That may end up being a ticket home For Clyde and Elena. The couple received a total of 18 out of 30, leaving them with 34 out of a possible 60 points.

4) Leeza, Leeza, Leeza! The dancing seemed to be a side note as more hoopla was made about it being Leeza's birthday. After last week's performance, I was a bit nervous to see Leeza step onto the floor. Thankfully she actually looked cute and youthful, despite the whole big production about it being a 'milestone' birthday. She seemed a lot more relaxed and had fun dancing the mambo to "Independent Women" with partner Tony. They did so much better than last week, although Len wanted to see her "give it a bit more welly". I really have no idea what this means, but I'm not going to argue. Bruno had his own interpretation and told Leeza to "let her tramp out". Please Leeza ... keep your tramp right where it is. Along with all 7s from the judges, Leeza received a big bouquet for her birthday. Aw. With last week's scores, Leeza and Tony earned a combine total of 33 out of 60 points.

5) Ian and Cheryl were up next with their quickstep. In rehearsal, Ian had a problem kicking his own shins. Ouch! Ian's dad sat in on rehearsal and was impressed with Ian's dancing ... and even more impressed with Cheryl. "Don't Get Me Wrong” They seem to be continuing a black costume trend and Ian appeared more relaxed and confident. It was a pretty good performance, but a little more boring to me than their performance from last week. There were a few problems with posture and hold and Bruno thought it was a little too "skippy". Even when the dancing isn't stellar, I think Ian has enough charm on the dance floor to compensate. He and Cheryl are a formidable couple on the floor and earned 22 points for their quickstep; a two-week total of 43 out of 60 possible points.

6) Paulina Porizkova really charmed me last week with her sense of humor and down to earth approach. That said, I really don't think she'll be anywhere close to winning the competition, but we'll see. During the rehearsals, she mentioned that she was having some "issues" with the mambo. She and partner Alec did a very respectable mambo to "La Bamba" -- the only problem, as the judges would point out, is that perhaps a mambo shouldn't be quite so respectable. As a sidenote, I also really didn't care for either Paulina or Alec's costumes. I think it added to the yawn factor of this routine. Still, they received a total of 21 points for the night and a combined total of 40 out of 60.

7) "There's some stuff in the quickstep that just don't feel right." -- Billy Ray Cyrus
Yes, Billy Ray was back this week, this time attempting the quickstep with partner Karina. During rehearsals, he obviously had a lot of problems with the holds, his achy-breaky frame and the rhythm, but actually did a decent job on the floor dancing to "Ring of Fire". Ok, so he had a sequined guitar motif on the back of his jacket. But the dance seemed to fit the music and Billy Ray seemed to keep up with the steps. The routine inspired Len to give us this great quote: "You came out like the wild man of wongo doing the Okeefenokee two-step" Bruno said he could overlook the Riverdance routine at the end of the performance as Cyrus made a huge improvement over last week. Carrie Ann agreed and said he was the most improved dancer yet. Which sounds great, but really, he couldn't possibly have been worse than last week, could he? The pair earned 7s across the board, giving them a 21 out of 30 for the night.

8) First let me say that Heather Mills seems to be a total powder keg of controversy for Dancing viewers. I mean really, just check out the comments from last week. This week, though, I think she just may win over a few fans. I also have to say thank goodness that she had a vast improvement in her outfit and hairdo this week. She seemed to lose about 20 years off the look from last week. She and partner Jonathan Roberts performed a fun and quite amazing mambo to "Mambo Italiano" ... you know, that song from the Olive Garden commercials? Yeah ... I'm now craving fettuccine alfredo. But back to dancing... Heather really did a great job with the dance and kept up with every step, even including a back walkover. I didn't see that one coming at all. The duo received all 8s from the judges for this week's performance, leaving them with 42 out of 60 for a combined score.

9) John Ratzenberger seems to be sort of playing the "Jerry Springer" role this season, with a lot of references to age and relying heavily on charm. But that's ok, because you really just have to love watching him dance and have fun. This week he took on the high-energy quickstep with partner Edyta. They strutted their stuff to "Lady is a Tramp" and this was actually a really good performance. John may be no match physically for Ian or Joey, but he's got pizzazz and it showed in the dance. They received all 7s for a total of 21 for the quickstep and a combined score of 38 out 60.

10) Last week, Laila Ali came out strong and is fast becoming a fan favorite already. Could she do it again this week with the mambo? Apparently so, because Laila and Maxim blew most everyone else out of the water with their hot and spicy mambo. Seriously, I think she may be the one to beat this season. Her confidence and enthusiasm showed through and she captured the attention of the audience with her shimmying wonderland. The judges were very impressed as well and Laila and Maxim received a 9 from each judge giving them the highest score of the night, leaving them with a total 50 out of 60 for both weeks' performances.

11) The last dance of the night was left to Joey Fatone and partner Kym Johnson. Joey seemed to be feeling the pressure to keep up the strong performance from last week. Kym wasn't letting up in rehearsal, either, telling Joey he was having a serious problem keeping his backside in. I know that's tough, because I have that problem myself. Ahem. After a goofy intro, they danced a respectable and fun quickstep to Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It". The judges seemed entertained, but mentioned a few problems with the footwork. Kym and Joey received straight 8s for a total of 24 for the night; a total combined score of 48 out of 60.

Laila looked like a cow moving across the floor. How could they give her a 9. A 7 or 8 I could have overlooked as the quilt trip, but a nine is way off. Heather was great and even Leeza was better than Ali.

I thought Laila was wonderful. And she deserved every bit of that vote. What the hell does her size have to do with it anyway? She looked great.

They all danced well, but, none thrilled me the way Heather Mills did. I am so in awe of this woman that I can't understand why people who don't know her are so mean?

She's done more good than most humans, and she's an excellent role model.

Paul McCartney is an icon, but, he's also not a nice person. He seeded the press with vicious stories about Heather, the mother of his child. He's a real jerk, in my eyes. Heather has more than redeemed herself. It's a disgrace that this woman who dedicates her life to causes, is demeaned by a spoiled and narcissistic prima donna like McCartney.
I used to be a fan, but, now, I believe in Heather. Paul McCartney is dead to me.

Obviously another one of those people who obsessed with having women look like famine victims. Laila Ali looked 10x more sexy than any other woman on that show. Her moves were better than any other, and her size is just fine. If you want to starve yourself to be thin, keep it to yourself. Don't put it on others.

Malissia said:

That couldn't have been said better. Thank you so much LEM for that comment about Laila. I agree 100%

I was in awe of Heather.
If you didnt know she had an artificial leg, you would have no idea.
Her moves were just as good as any of the other women, and she can dance.
She did difficult choreography and pulled it off.

My faves are
1. Ian/Steve Sanders (I just cant stop referring to him as that, BTW did you catch his fellow 90210'er Brian Austin Green rooting him on in the audience?) He looks like a pro.

2. Joey. Joey has a great combo of total fun, and real talent.

Leeza was great. I love that shes 50 and looks that great and moves that great and her body looks great.
I threw a couple of votes her way.

I enjoyed watching John R/Cliff Clavin, he is charming. But hes no Jerry Springer.

I like Laila Ali, she did better then last week, Last week she looked masculine, this week she looked more feminine.

Apollo is good too.

I agree with Carrie Ann, Billy Ray was the most improved.

The rest are forgettable.

I love this show.
Such good clean fun!!!

I think it's gonna come down to Joey, Ian, and Laila...

That said, the judges kept talking about the women not using their hips in the dance - I think it's because the are almost all too skinny to even have hips, so they've forgotten where they are ;)

I loved last night's show! great surprise to see Heather having a great mambo, moving her hips, and Jonathan is a great partner, seems like the classic ballroom dancer and got the Latin thing going on, too, and is so genteel (a southern term) with her. :)

loved Laila, that woman was too hot even for Max to handle. think she will probably be in the finals.

will be interesting to see who goes first tonight....possibly Clyde or Shandi.

OOPS! I forgot Billy Ray may have to go first.....if all the Disney channel Hannah Montana fans don't keep him on.

Malissia said:

I have a strong feeling that it isn't just going to be the Disney show that does it.Billy Ray still has quite a few fans of his own.

Billy Ray Cyrus is a very nice person.
He is very talented. He will have my
vote anytime. I have been a fan since
he came on the scene. He has been very successful SINCE Acky Breaky Heart. Has
fans all over the world. He is good at
everything he does.

Malissia said:

I agree completely. People just don't seem to give him the credit he is due. They judge him very unfairly. I think he is awesome. I am so proud of him for hanging in there .He will continue to get my vote.

Can someone please tell me the name of the mambo song that Laila Ali danced to? Cheers!!

LEM said:

The song that Laila danced to is "Marcaibo Oriental" by Beny More.
