American Idol Recap: Sanjaya Is (Finally!) Out!
Ding dong, Sanjaya's gone! And it's about time! After seven weeks of utter ridiculousness, Sanjaya Malakar is out of the running to be the season six American Idol winner.
Hi guys, Lindsey here. Don't worry, the amazing Julia will be back next Tuesday, but for tonight, I'm here with your Idol recap.
The top seven elimination show started out with a clarification from Simon. Rumors swirled all day that the notoriously mean judge rolled his eyes last night after Chris Richardson expressed his sympathy to those at Virginia Tech. Simon said that while he wouldn't normally entertain such rumors about himself or the competition on air, he felt it was necessary this time. He even admitted that while he might not be the nicest guy around, he would never. ever. do something like that. Even before Idol aired a clip of him really rolling his eyes at Paula last night, I believed him. I still think Simon’s a big softie at heart.
After the remaining contestants (ironically) sang "I'm Alright," Fergie performed her single, "Big Girls Don’t Cry." Was it just me, or did anyone else think it was weird that Fergie was performing during country week -- just seemed like a strange juxtaposition. That said, I thought Miss Black Eyed Pea looked fab. Loved the hair... and the shoes... and the song! I’m downloading it now, actually.
What I really didn't get about the show, however, was how they stretched it out. I get that it's sweeps time, and Fox wants the stellar ratings for the 9pm hour, but there was one whole segment of the show that had no mention of the singers or the songs. The show went on for like 10 minutes about next week's special American Idol Gives Back. Yes, I'm psyched about it, but I didn't need a 10-minute reminder!
Then, they showed the contestants taking a fieldtrip to the Dreamworks studio, where they met founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and got a sneak peek of Shrek 3. Will somebody PLEASE tell me what in the world this has to do with American Idol?!? I don't understand. Besides my confusion, I was mildly entertained by the contestants pretending to voice Princess Fiona and Puss 'n' Boots. Then again, it doesn't take much to amuse me.
Also, for those of you who don't know, I'm a completely unapologetic country music fan, so when this week's mentor, Martina McBride took the stage, I was in heaven. What I thought she lacked in mentoring critique last night, she more than made up for with her gorgeous performance of "Anyway."
Now, for the real meat of the show, which in my opinion should only take about five minutes, the judging.
Ryan split the top seven into two groups, one obviously being the top and the other the bottom. Sanjaya, Lakisha and Blake were put on one side, and Phil, Jordin and Chris on the other. He then told Melinda she was safe (as if there was ever doubt) and asked her to choose which group she thought was going home. How awful! Luckily, Melinda, being the nice girl she is, sat her butt right down on stage and refused to answer. Love her -- and her straight hair this week.
Unsurprisingly, Lakisha and Sanjaya were part of the bottom, but I had a hard time believing Blake was. He's not my favorite, but he does have a unique stye and the judges love him. Luckily, Ryan told him he was safe right away.
So, the bottom two came down to the powerful Lakisha and the wacky Sanjaya. I for one am happy it was Sanjaya who was sent home. I felt for the kid, though, when the tears started flowing after his elimination was announced. After all, he is only 17. But he managed to pull himself together and sing "Something To Talk About" one more time -- even subbing in the lyrics, "Let's give 'em something to talk about... talk about HAIRRRR...."
Well Sanjaya, you certainly have given us all something to talk about this Idol season.
Will you miss Sanjaya? Do you think America made the right decision? Were you expecting to see him go? And more importantly, can you tell me what Fergie was doing on country week? Just kidding, kinda.
But seriously, go to our American Idol Countdown page and vote for which contestant you think is going home next week!

I am really sad to see Sanjaya Go. I feel bad that I didn't vote for him yesterday, but I was tired of people who had made up their mind to hate him and that was just pissing me off. Personoally I thought his performance today was great, one of his best really; yesterday he was probably a bit nervous and distracted, but today he sounded great. Go sanjaya...you rock! We will miss you.
I'm not even going to watch the show anymore. It was all about Sanjaya. The guy was entertaining, he had style, he was a true performer. All the other contestants are soooo BORING. Plus itâs not like he was the worst singer ever. People keep comparing him to William Hung , and thatâs so unfair. Its not like Taylor Hicks could sing but he went on to win the show. I would have liked to watch Sanjaya hang on to see what he would pull next. Iâm heartbroken to see him go. Sanjya keep smiling you are a true star.
Lindsey how can you not LOVE Sanjaya???? I'm going to miss him.
I was glad to see Sanjaya go. He was the weakest singer of the 7, so he should have gone.
I actually felt bad for Sanjaya last night. I mean, I think it was because he should have gone as the 12th or 11th contestant, so it just dragged it out. I'm also a sucker for guys who cry. It just breaks my heart. So although I think it's absolutely appropriate that he isn't in the competition any longer, I still feel for the kid.
It also sucks for him now being out of the Idol "bubble" because he'll learn more about what was going out out in real world with people slamming him left and right. I did love how he made the lyric "Let's give them something to talk about other than hair." So funny. Loved it.
Yeah!!!!!!!! Seeee ya!!!!!
I was glad to see him go...although I do feel like Lakisha won't be lasting too much longer. My husband has wanted her gone since "Diamonds". I want my girl Jordin to win...she's SO GOOD!
Nice job filling the big shoes Julia leaves to fill -- will certainly look forward to the amazing Julia's parting shots 'bout Sanjaya.
There must be an extra skip in her step today.
He's gone, but that boy's surely on the Huang track to fame and fortune.
Say what you will about Sanjaya, he made the show more interesting. I never watched the show before, and I was always entertained by his performances. Good or bad, he committed to them and seemed to have a good time onstage once his nerves settled down. He will be missed. That said, I was totally surprised that Chris was not in the bottom three. I thought that his performance was AWFUL. I truly hope that he is the next to go home.
It's been a good week in "tv land": first, Clyde Drexler went home on dancing with the stars...Then, Simon Cowell told my girl Jordin that she just might win American Idol...Then, Sanjaya went home...Yes, it's been a good week for tv...such nice birthday gifts...
well I have to say I also felt bad for Sanjaya he does seem like a very sweet kid but no I was still glad he went home though I really really didn't care for him at all! I also was very surprised Chris was not on the bottom 3 he probably should have been but he is so dang cute I am glad he didn't go home yet that doesn't mean I think he will win but I like him better then Sanaya I think Sanjaya should have gone home a long time ago as well. I also think Lakisha is cute but not one of the best singers I doubt she will win but she is nice!My vote is for Malinda or Jordin also
I am very sad to see Sanjaya leave American Idol. I believe that he can sing and he will get a contract.
Bye Sanjaya! Sorry you stayed so long. I really do think he is a nice kid but can't sing a lick.
I agree Simon is really a teddy bear but he is called brash and mean because he generally is spot on with his critiques and likes to tell the truth and not sugar coat it. He doesn't have to be politically correct!
I think the top 3 will be Melinda, Jordin and Blake.
I was so happy to see Sanjaya finally
be voted off. He was such a bad singer
and getting to be so smart alecky about
staying in. It just made me so happy.
THANK GOD it's finally over the horrible dreaded listening to the "sanjaya" on going saga! I cannot believe it took this long but now maybe we can get back down to a singing competition! Next week 3 girls and 3 guys and they are the best of the lot for sure..... Except that I think that Brandon was good also ... Haley's gone with her less and less clothing approach to winning - jeez by now she'd be almost naked....... So on with the REAL american Idol show and let the best person win LaKisha or Jordin for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I,like you any time.and i,love u so muct
Soooooooooooooo GLAD that sanjaya finally got what he deserve. THANK YOU
i wanted sanjaya out of there so i am so happy!!!!!!
Finally Sanjaya is gone!!! My prediction is Chris will go next!!
Everyone has to remember Sanjaya is only 17yrs old! (Teen) He was not able to pull it off for long but that doesn't mean he's not capable of getting to the top. (Still) If you can sing you have talent. Next is experience then comes opportunity. At 17yrs old he has proven to have all three. I wish them all success! cr
I wish Sanjaya lots of success. I really like him and it's too bad that articles like yours trashed him so unfairly. I will never watch your stupid show.
Sanjaya should have never made it to the final 12. Very talented singers such as Brandon and Stephanie Edwards should have gone further in the competition and the crazy voting tactics brought upon from votefortheworst.com ruined their chances.
Since American Idol is not a popularity contest,I feel the decision to send Sanjaya home was too long in the making
Yes he was fun for his fans, but the boy just flat out couldn't sing. He'll get a brake somewhere in hollywood, with all the other entertainers.
hes GONE finally.yeah
Sanjaya was sooooooo bad I didn't even watch the show anymore finnaly he got cut. Now I can watch American Idol angain.
Yipeeeeeee
Unfortunately I don't believe America votes really count. I think they use them as a gauge to see who should go and in what order. I lost my faith in the voting @ season Four. Now, Sanjaya was definetly a weak singer but I enoyed his performances. LOL. Remember Scott Savol??? He wasn't good but made it to top four and his attitude sucked! At least Sanjaya islikeable. I believe American Idol is going to be extremely boring the rest of the season. Sanjaya added lots of spice to the mix.
Sanjaya was not as strong of a singers as the rest of the clan. I was happy to see him go, but when he started crying I actualy felt sorry for him. I hope the best for him, but it was past his time.
