Katie Couric Wants Patience

Katie-Couric.jpgWhenever I hear the word patience I think of the Guns And Roses song of the same name. So when I read that Katie Couric hopes people will be patient with her as the anchor for the CBS nightly news, I couldn't help whistling that song in my head.

Katie is nothing if not optimistic about her gig over at CBS. Now seven months into it she's still getting her "sea legs." With the exception of her first week when her ratings looked promising, she's been consistently behind the other two network's programs bringing in only six million viewers.

So what's the problem? Katie thinks she knows:

"The people who used to watch me on the Today show are saying: 'What happened to her? She's not laughing and carrying on the way she used to.' " Couric adds, "At Today, I seemed to be enjoying myself. I seemed to be fun-loving." But she has tried to bring some of that "high-spiritedness" to her new workplace. "I hope the people at CBS are enjoying it, but, of course, the nightly news bunch is a fairly hard nut to crack."

Are you guys watching Katie? Are you watching any network news or is it all about Anderson Cooper over on CNN like it is for me? Talk back below.

And cue Axel Rose...

I personally like Katie a lot. I think she is poised, very educated, personable, yet is tough when needed. Katie does a good job balancing "happy" news and serious news well. Katie has interviewed presidents, prime ministers, gov't officials, and ceos all the time on the Today show. People just forget about that and just remember the cute jokes she made. People ARE used to her as Ms. Smile Joking Today Show host. People are very quick to criticize her. She is the first woman to have her own nightly news show,is going up against people's perception of what they think she is only good at (more pop stuff), and a tough audience. Katie. The first person to break a ceiling always has the hardest time because they are breaking through the most barriers. Let's give her the patience she deserves. P.S. - how many people that criticize her have actually watched her more than 5 times or more than just clip? Give her a chance.

Katie was so perky that you loved starting the morning with her. Her nighttime gig just isn't in the right timeslot for me. We loved her laugh and looks. She felt real. Im sure Meredith might have been better received if she did not have to follow in Katie's shadow. Katie was the girl next door with the smile, clothing and always the right thing to say. Poor Meredith looks like the dowdy stepsister.

Katie is too fluffy for the evening news!

Meredith is great and she is nobody's dowdy stepsister!

I always felt Katie is way overrated...

Bring back Dan Rather; he keeps President Bush in check.

Morning and daytime television news cater more to the female demographic, which partly explains Ms. Couric's success in her previous time slot. Older men are the primary consumers of evening news, network and cable. Ms. Couric is now trying to reach a very different audience.
