Massacre at Virginia Tech

I know we don't usually cover hard-hitting news on TV Cocktail, but I think we'd be remiss not to discuss the awful tragedy that occurred yesterday at Virginia Tech. 32 people were killed when a gunman, who police now suspect was 23-year-old student Cho Seung-hui, opened fire in a residence hall and classroom building. The gunman then reportedly turned the gun on himself. As of yet, a possible motive for the vicious crime has not bet identified or released.

In the wake of this devastation -- the most deadly school shooting in American history -- TV stations and media outlets scrambled to piece together what really happened. While watching CNN last night, I was struck by how the coverage relied so heavily on the technology of the students on campus. The program showed a several-minute video clip of the shootings that student Jamal Albarghouti took with his cell phone and e-mailed to the station.

Another news outlet discussed the ways social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were being used in the aftermath of the attack. Cameras zoomed in on the Facebook of one of the slain men. The page had essentially been turned into a tribute to him. Go go iVillage's own social networking to read a blog by one Virginia Tech alum.

Did any part of the coverage surprise you? Offend you? Talk about the tragedy and the way TV covered it below.

I think what happened yesterday at Virgina Tech is devasting because why would you walk into a school and kill 32 people and then pull the trigger on yourself.I what the South Korean kid did was ridiculous because you don't walk into any public building and start shooting people.I just want the people of Virgina Tech University who lost love ones or friends yesterday in the tragic event to know that I'm very, very, very sorry for what happen at the school.

I think the media should let it rest. They are not even letting the family members mourn in peace. What's done is done, drop it. We will never forget but keep it in our hearts and not in the media.
