Top Model's Whitney Dishes…
How quickly they fall! Whitney became the 7th girl sent home from America's Next Top Model. Here she talks about the meaning of "plus-size," Renee's bad attitude and the shock of being in the bottom two.
How did you get involved with Top Model?
I tried out for Cycle Seven after I quit the basketball team. It was right after my 21st birthday and I made it pretty far. I knew that modeling was always something that I had wanted to do so after I had some shots taken, I started building a portfolio and modeling on my own. But in Miami, Florida (where I am from), they were looking for super skinny models, and not plus-size models.
Then, Top Model actually called me--one of the personal assistants--and asked if I would try out for Cycle 8 of the show. So, I got in my car and drove up to Tampa with my little sister where we waited around forever to audition, but I made it.
How do you feel about the term "plus-size"?
That's one thing I wanted to clear up: plus size does not mean fat. It means full-figured. I'm 5'10 and 160 pounds and I'm definitely not fat, so I want to clear the air about that. As a plus-sized model I'm comfortable with the term. Because I was an athlete, I've always loved my body and I feel comfortable in a bikini. I know being a plus-sized model does not mean you're fat.
Do you think a plus-sized model will ever win?
Well, I think there should be an America's Next Top Model and then also an America's Next Top Plus-Sized Model. I lucked out with Diana; others before me had to do it on their own. Now I understand how someone can lose their fire on the show. You need to exude the utmost confidence at all times and sometimes that gets hard.
Who were you closest to (besides Diana)?
I loved all of the girls! Renee was made out to be the Wicked Witch of the West but she's not all that bad. She has her issues but she's dealing with them on her own. Felicia was like a little sister to me. Jaslene has her Cha Cha Diva'ness.
What was your favorite photo shoot?
My favorite photo shoot was the "dead" photo shoot. We had awesome make-up and a great location. The hotel was supposedly haunted and it was just spooky and an overall eerie location which helped us get into character.
Least favorite?
The first one, the lesbian scene I did with Samantha. I had to wear this boxy suit while Samantha got to wear this gorgeous dress. I was almost embarrassed to see my photo. I have big breasts and a voluptuous figure and I just looked fat. I also had to do the shoot with another girl while everyone else got their own photo.
Did you feel there were any advantages/disadvantages to being a plus-sized model?
The advantage was the support network. With the emergence of Jennifer Hudson and Tyra, there is more attention being given to fuller figured women in the media. Full-figured women are more accepted into society and there is a sense of welcoming.
There are disadvantages as well. For the prom episode, I had to wear a dress that was two sizes too small. In the Botanical Gardens, there were no dresses that would fit Diana and me. The world has not seen a plus-sized model take it by storm.
During the last challenge, did you think you were going home?
What they didn't show on TV was that Mr. Jay told me I had finally learned the art of modeling. I was really confident coming out of that photo shoot. I was shocked to be in the bottom two and shocked to be eliminated.
Who did you think should have gone home instead of you?
I don't know if there is anybody that should have get home instead of me, but I didn't deserve to go home.
Who do you think will win?
Who I hope will win and who I think should win are Dionne and Jaslene. Dionne, because she's bloomed so much. They found her walking through the mall and she's bloomed into a polished woman. Jaslene because has been through so much personal history. It's her number one aspiration. Some people want to be lawyers, some people want to be doctors, Jaslene wants to be America's Next Top Model. I hope that happens.
Do you have any regrets about the show?
No. I knew when I went on the show that I wouldn't have any regrets. As we say in basketball, leave it on the court. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. How many people get to live in the Hollywood Hills? This doesn't happen to normal people. If I left school and was going to be in debt $9,000 to my father, I knew I had to make it worth it.
What's next?
I have to graduate first. Once I walk across that stage in June, I will move to New York City to pursue modeling.
