And we swap to the Golds and their high-end problems. Once again, folks, they rule this show. Great lines, great chemistry and great style. This is why I keep coming back for more (or maybe it’s the nostalgia for my north shore Long Island town when I see Ari’s wife all dolled up to handbag shop). Nevertheless, I have to admit that I’m a little mad at the writers right now. I went to look up Ari’s wife’s name on the HBO website because I thought I had missed it along the way, but she is actually listed as “Mrs. Ari.” Since she’s become a character I’ve grown to love on this show, I sure hope they give her a name soon. So forgive me for calling her “Mrs. Ari,” but that’s what she’s technically called.

Anyway, Mr. and Mrs. Ari are called in to speak with a teacher at the prep school their son, Jonah, is applying to get into. They think Jonah will get rejected because he hit another kid with a ruler. The two of then also continue to blame each other, using fairly colorful language, which ends up being the reason the school will not admit the kid in the first place. It’s actually Ari’s potty-mouth that the headmaster refuses to deal with. So maybe the writers are poking fun at themselves. They can’t muster the strength to name this strong female character, but she always ends up being right in the end.

By the way, I didn’t even realize the Golds had a son. As far as I know, up until now, we’ve only seen their daughter Sara, but I welcome the writers to bring on as many Golds as they possibly can. Just as an aside, Sara is the coolest kid. Not only did she dance with Vince Chase at her Bat Mitzvah, but she called out her dad for eating a mint on Yom Kippur (from “Return of the King,” Season 3).

Somewhere during a frenetic conversation among Ari, E and Vince, E says, “Sloane and I are taking a break.” This is sad news to me. I love the women on this show, and I feel like I’m in Women’s Studies 101 tonight. They “kill off” the good female characters, refuse to name the effective ones and leave us with a girl pimping herself out to use a toilet.

More importantly, in the end of this episode, E finally smooth talks Billy, who agrees to screen Medellin. Billy does jumping jacks while E and Vince watch the film. Vince loves it. E hates it. I bet the film is really bad. I know I was hard on E in my last post, and I take it back because I actually think he is the only character with any sense on the show. Well, “street smarts,” is what I mean. Vince is a little like a puppy without any sense of consequence. When he learns he’s been kicked out of his hotel, and after E has been yelled at by their financial manager, he says, “Aah, we’ll just crash at Johnny’s.” Will E keep quiet about his feelings? If not, how will they tell Billy? And will Ari let Vince stamp his face on a Medellin poster? We’ll see.
