Army Wives "Truth & Consequence" Recap: August 12
This week's episode began with a get together to welcome General Grayson and his wife Victoria to Ft. Marshall. How nice was it to see the lovely Barbara Eden, who plays Victoria Grayson, on television again! General Grayson was at Ft. Marshall to assess the General Baker situation. Rumor had it that General Baker was going to be replaced and that Colonel Holden was going to continue with command but on a permanent basis. The Holden's took this in stride but Lenore was taking full advantage of the situation to try and impress the Graysons any way she could. While the guests mingled Lenore took her opportunity to talk with the Graysons. She was sure to stress that her husband wanted to be there but she convinced him to stay in the hospital a little longer. She also let them know that her husband was ready to come back to work in perfect form. When the Grayson's excused themselves a shortwhile later to go talk with the Holden's the look on Lenore's face spelled nothing but trouble. You could tell the wheels were turning inside her head and what was to come was not going to be good.
After the party was over Lenore went to the hospital. She shaved her husband's face and told him he needed to look presentable because General Grayson could stop by at any time. She criticized her husband for not washing his hair recently and he not so politely reminded her that he had just had brain surgery. The fact didn't seem to phase her or make her realize how ridiculous she sounded so she suggested he use a comb. She told her husband that she could win over Victoria Grayson but it was his responsability to convince General Grayson that he was ready to go back to work and resume his duties as Post Commander. General Baker simply told Lenore he was tired of everything. She took it to mean her fussing about shaving and showering, he clarified he meant the army and army life all together. This scared Lenore and scared her bad. Not long after the statement was made Lenore went into the hallway and dialed Marilyn. She informed Marilyn she had heard more about Claudia Joy. Of course, Marilyn was all ears to hear some juicy gossip so she could share it with the rest of the rumor mill. So now the battle was on, Lenore was in full attack mode.
The next morning Marilyn and Angie were out for a power walk. Marilyn took this opportunity to share the juicy gossip that Lenore had made her privy to the evening before. She told Angie that she heard more of what really happened the night that Claudia Joy hit and killed the man on the road. She told Angie that it wasn't an accident at all, or at least not in the way Claudia Joy explained it. She said that Claudia Joy was not alone in the car, she was in fact with a man and they were so busy making out in the car that they failed to see the man and that is why he was hit. Angie ate up this new piece of the story and off they walked deep in discussion and no doubt adding a little more to the already false story.
Joan and Roland were out for a run and they discussed the rumor about having General Baker replaced permanently. Roland said if that was the case then Joan's temporary assignment of executive officer would in fact become a permanent position. Joan said that it was true and that it was a great career opportunity for her. She said she felt she owed it to Colonel Holden because he had supported her during the Belgrad situation and during her PTSD treatment. He never doubted her or her abilities and she wanted to live up to that by staying on. She also let Roland know that he and their marriage were a priority for her and she wanted his opinion on the matter. Roland reminded Joan that they wanted a family, that Ft. Marshall was supposed to be a temporary station and that with this posting it would be more permanent. Joan told Roland she wanted him to be ok with this. In true Roland form he said he was ok with it. We know better though, he is not ok with it. I don't understand why he can't tell his wife that he wants to start a family now, that he supports her and her career but he needs something in return and that would be at least part of the life that they agreed to have. I don't think it's unreasonable but for some reason Roland can't or won't share any of this with Joan.
At the commissary, Angie lost no time in sharing her new found information with more ladies on post. She of course added her own embellishment to the already fictional story and said that Claudia Joy's father had to pay a lot of hush money to keep the truth hidden. She also hit a new low by implying that Amanda was not Colonel Holden's daughter because they did not look alike. The other wife was excited to be part of the new and "true" story and you could tell that it was going to grow and grow as the story spread. A few feet away Pamela was sitting in her van, signal light on, waiting for a car to pull out of a parking spot so she could be close. Before she could pull in though another vehicle stole the spot from her. Pamela was having none of it. She jumped out of her van and confronted the man, whom she called Gilligan, due to his hat and told him to move his vehicle. He seemed amused by Pamela's interpretation of his hat and told her he did not see her waiting. She told him he was lying and that he needed to move because she was having a bad day. She informed him that his stealing her spot was just the icing on the cake. Her water heater was broken, her cell phone was lost and she needed to buy flour because her kids needed to make a "paper mache horsie that was going to be a fricken nightmare". Oh I laughed so hard at her rantings. She then asked the man if he was going to move his vehicle or were they going to stand there all day "doing the hula". I can only take this as another stab at his attire, he was wearing an awfully loud Hawaiin shirt! Gilligan wasn't moving his vehicle and so Pamela stormed off back to her van yelling sarcastic comments to the car honking at her because she was blocking traffic. It was so amusing to hear her use her wit. How many times have we been in that situation and wanted to do what she just did but instead yelled inside our cars where no one could hear us?
At the rose gargen Lenore was giving Victoria a tour of what they had done. All the while crediting her husband with the idea of it and the other beautification improvements on post. She really was laying it on a little thick in my opinion, but that's Lenore right? Victoria asked Lenore what her opinion was of Colonel Holden's performance as temporary Post Commander. You could tell it was killing Lenore to try and say something nice and the best she could do was to assess his abilities as competant. She was then asked her opinion of Claudia Joy. Lenore said Claudia Joy was a nice woman and that Victoria shouldn't listen to anything that she may have heard about her. When Victoria inquired as to what that may be Lenore did not hesitate to start sharing the gossip. On the street behind the rose garden we could see Roxy driving by, on her way to work. She didn't miss the intense looking conversation between Lenore and Victoria.
Roxy apparently called an emergency meeting at the bar. Roland, Pamela, Denise and Roxy were all there ready to tell Claudia Joy of what they had heard at the commissary, the hospital and everywhere on post. When they finished sharing all they had heard with Claudia Joy and asked what they should do, a shocked Claudia Joy said that they were to rise above it and do nothing. That she and Michael had decided to take the high road and ignore it. At that moment Amanda walked into the bar visibly upset. Claudia Joy asked her what she was doing there and Amanda just blurted out that she heard Michael was not her father and she wanted to know if it was true. The conversation resumed at the Holden house between Michael, Claudia Joy and their girls. Claudia Joy shared the story about the accident. They asked who was saying these awful things and why. They were told that sometimes when people achieve success they become a target for those who may be jealous of them. Amanda asked if it was Lenore. Michael told her it didn't matter who it was that they were all to stick together and trust one another. The girls hugged their mom and told her they believed in her and not the rumors. Later on as Michael and Claudia Joy were getting ready for bed she was furious of how anyone could attack a child with the rumors and lies. Michael didn't respond and when asked if he was listening he simply said yes. Claudia Joy knew there was more to his thoughts and pressed him to share what he was thinking. He said that they always knew what kind of woman Lenore was, that she was unstable but that Claudia Joy "fired the first shot" when she confronted Lenore about the racist rumor she had started about Michael. Claudia Joy was furious that her husband would blame her for starting this and all that had happened.
At the Sherwood home Frank and Denise were making love when they were rudely interrupted by the phone. Although the conversation was brief Denise could tell by Frank's demeanor it meant he was going to redeploy. Frank confirmed this by saying he would be leaving in one week. He wanted to get back to the fun but Denise said no and wanted to talk. She told Frank he needed to go see Jeremy, that now he is deploying and in this time of war he could not leave things as they were any longer.
Meanwhile Roland and Joan came in from their night out. Laughing, giggling, kissing and being silly. They decided ice cream was in order. While Roland went to the kitchen to prepare their ice cream Joan took off Roland's coat that she was wearing. When she threw it on the couch a hotel key card came out of the pocket. She picked it up and stuck it to her forehead, continuing to be silly. She then asked Roland in a joking manner if he had stayed in the hotel for business or if he was getting a little something on the side. Roland didn't answer her, he dropped his eyes and in that moment everything became serious. He confessed to Joan that he had a one night stand with the reporter who had written the story on him. Joan was furious asking a million questions. Did he love the woman, was she sexy, why had he done it when he swore he was not that guy. Roland told her it was a mistake. He told her that when he was with the reporter she was interested in him, she was funny, smart and they had a good time. He did it because for once it was about him and not the army. Joan accused him of being every cliche in the book and asked why he didn't tell her sooner. Roland told her he didn't confess because he did not want her to have to carry it around with her, it was his burden to carry. Joan went into the bedroom and Roland left the house.
The next morning Claudia Joy was at the shooting range with Victoria Grayson. Victoria was taking a turn with a gun and target and being quite impressive at it. When she was done and the ladies were walking to their car she asked Claudia Joy what her impression of General Baker was. Claudia Joy told Victoria she needed to ask Michael that question but Victoria was not having any of that she wanted her opinion. Claudia Joy said that General Baker was doing an exemplary job. Then she was asked about Lenore. Claudia Joy could have been like Lenore and let it all hang out about what was going on but being the classy lady that she is she said Lenore was a devoted wife and gave a great deal of herselt to the post. Victoria agreed that was her impression as well.
Pamela was leaving and appointment and ran into Colonel Holden, General Grayson and several other soldiers who were on their way into the building she was leaving. Colonel Holden introduced her to General Grayson and they talked briefly about Chase. As they turned to go their separate ways one of the soldiers called out to her, it was "Gilligan" from the commissary parking lot. He turned out to be Major Casey, the new public affairs officer for base. Pamela was flustered at the realization that she told off an officer but he didn't seem to have any difference in personality in or out of uniform. He gave Pamela a card and told her to meet him at 14:00 at the address listed. Being an officer she felt required to oblige and told him she would be there.
Frank was preparing his rucksack for deployment when there was a knock at the door. It was Amanda she said she was there to go for a walk with Denise. He told her Denise just called and was delayed at the hospital but was on her way home now. He invited her in. The tension in the room was uncomfortable to watch. Amanda broke the silence by saying she had pictures of Jeremy from Fort Benning. Frank asked if she had been to see Jeremy and she said yes then offered the pictures to him. Frank took the envelope and looked through the pictures. You could tell it was hard for him not to break down. I don't think he even realized what an impact the pictures were going to have on him. He put the pictures back in the envelope just as Denise walked in the door. He told them to have a nice walk and left the house.
At 14:00 Pamela arrived at the address on the card. It was the post radio station and Major Casey was waiting for her. They made small talk about how boring the post radio show is and then he offered her a job for an hour a day. He wanted to "spice up" the airwaves and with their little meeting at the commissary he believed Pamela was just the person for the job. She asked about pay, child care and meal allowance and he told her she would be doing it for free, no perks and so Pamela declined the offer.
Back at their home Frank was getting ready to go out. He told Denise that he was going to see Jeremy. When she thanked him for doing this he told her he couldn't promise her anything but he was going. This was a huge step for him. Just a short while ago he said he no longer had a son and that Jeremy was dead to him and now he was making the first step in contacting his son and driving to see him no less. This must have been really hard for a stubborn man like Frank Sherwood.
Over at General Grayson's office Lenore arrived to meet Victoria for drinks. They were making small talk and Victoria was finishing up whatever she need to before leaving when a message came that she needed to sign for a fax. She excused herself and said she would be right back. Lenore took the opportunity to poke around. She noticed a file with a memo attached to it. The memo was addressed to Michael and said that he should reconsider because he could use his support. It was signed General Grayson. Unable to control herself Lenore opened the file and saw it read TOP SECRET project Windfall. She made a mental note of this and quickly closed the file as Victoria returned and off they went for drinks.
At the park Roxy and Pamela were discussing the radio job offer. Roxy couldn't believe that Pamela turned down her "own radio show". Pamela said it wasn't her show and she turned it down because she wasn't getting paid and she had never done it before. Roxy said she was being chicken. Just then Marilyn and Angie came over. Marilyn asked Pamela about Scott and their pizza date. Pamela told her not to go there. Marilyn said she would go there and Angie said she was just cleaning brushes and Pamela was having a pizza date. Pamela asked how she could know that but determined she was being spied on or at least watched carefully. Pamela then told them to leave because she was getting a rash. This seemed to put the two ladies off for awhile and they walked off. Roxy then asked Pamela if she still thought having a microphone to tell the world off would be a bad thing. That seemed to change Pamela's mind and she was soon back at the radio station talking to Major Casey. She told him she would do it but she wanted gas and food allowance and child care. She also said she wanted her own show that was dedicated to military wives where they could call in a share. He said he couldn't do that and then turned to listen to the soldier who was reading the day's news in a very boring tone of voice. It didn't take long to cave and he agreed to Pamela's terms.
At Fort Benning Major Sherwood was walking through the field of training soldiers. Jeremy spotted him right away. Jeremy was called out of formation to go speak with his dad whom he referred to as "sir". Frank asked him why he had hit his mom and all Jeremy could say was that answer wasn't good enough. Jeremy told him that he asked himself the same question everyday and never got a good answer. All he could say was that he was angry and felt a lot of pressure. Frank decided it was his fault that he wasn't there enough to teach Jeremy right from wrong. Jeremy denied this and told Frank he was a good father and again called him sir. Frank said "Stop calling me sir, I am your father". That was confirmation to Jeremy that he had his dad back and with a simple "Carry on" to Jeremy Frank turned and walked away.
That evening many were getting ready for a farewell dinner for General Grayson. Michael apologized to Claudia Joy for blaming her for Lenore's behavior. Claudia Joy told him he was right and that if she would have listened in the first place and not confronted Lenore about the rumor like he asked this may not have happened. He then told her if she did that then she wouldn't be the woman he loved and married. They hugged and made up. Things didn't look so good for Joan and Roland. When Roland arrived home from work he found Joan waiting on the couch in her dress blues. She told Roland to hurry up and get dressed for the farewell dinner or did he forget. Roland told her he assumed she would rather go alone because of what happened. Joan told Roland that she didn't want to go alone and that she had decided that although she was hurt and upset she was going to put Roland's indiscretion behind her and work on their marriage. Roland said he couldn't go with her and make small talk pretending everything was ok. He then dropped a bombshell. He wanted to separate for awhile. He realized he hasn't been happy in a long time and that he believed they were going in two different directions. Joan said she thought they were back to where they used to be and he said they weren't. He then told her he was going to a hotel for the night and would call her tomorrow.
At the farewell dinner Claudia Joy and Denise were talking about the progress that was made between Frank and Jeremy. Frank, Michael and the General were joking around having a good time when Michael went outside to see if Joan was ok. He inquire about Roland and all Joan could say was that he wasn't feeling well and so he didn't come. Michael understanding she wanted to be alone went back inside. Meanwhile Lenore had her sites set on General Grayson once again. She made small talk about pralines and how the best food comes from Charlotte, NC. She then made her big move. She told General Grayson that she knew that if her husband were there he would give his support to the General's favorite project. General Grayson seemed confused and asked what project. She said Project Windfall. A shocked General asked how she knew about that project, she didn't answer. How could she though, she did snoop into top secret and personal files right? The General went over to two MPs and spoke with them briefly, in turn they went over to Lenore and asked her to come with them. Lenore was confused as to what was going on but went with them. She was escorted out with everyone watching in silence. Although everyone was shocked and confused by this scene, I myself was delighted as was my husband who was laughing and saying "Right on!". A short time later in an interrogation room Lenore was being questioned by a man in a dark suit. She said she was Mrs. General Baker and she did not have to answer any questions. She demanded to know why she was brought there and being treated like a criminal. The man in the suit unphased by her attitude informed her that she did in fact have to answer his questions, that her knowledge about Windfall and her careless attitude to talk about it freely made it a breach of national security. This was a big blow for Lenore and she knew she was in it deep and so she sat down.
The next day Claudia Joy was in her garden when Victoria pulled into the drive. Claudia Joy said she thought Victoria had left. Victoria told her she wanted to say goodbye. She then said Michael had done a great service to her husband many years ago in Kosavo. Claudia Joy admitted not knowing anything about it. Victoria said that Michael was not the kind of man who would talk about something like that and she and her husband never understood how he was passed over for promotion. They didn't understand how General Baker was promoted and put in command of Fort Marshall and Michael was not. She then added that it has all been rectified now, making reference to Lenore's predicament. Claudia Joy didn't understand and so Victoria let her in on a little secret. She said that the file Lenore saw was in her husband's briefcase and if she were to admit she was snooping General Grayson would deny having the file. Victoria made the false file and put it there. Project Windfall was indeed a real project, but one that had been aborted two years prior. She only knew about it because her husband talked in his sleep. She had suspicions about Lenore and so she planted the file and because Lenore couldn't help herself, proving Victoria right, she tried to get the upper hand anyway she could and it backfired. With that she said goodbye and left Claudia Joy to digest all that was said.
Later that day Pamela had her first show at the radio station. She made her way through the news trying to get a feel for her new job. Once her bulletins were read she announced that she was now opening the lines to callers for "Have at It with Pamela Moran". She let the listeners know that she was there to allow the spoused to call in and vent their frustrations or just talk. Everyone was listening enjoying Pamela's wit and taking in the important things that she said. The Army comes first no matter what. If you can't understand that you need to get out. Everyone fears for the safety of their loved ones and so everyone should forget about rank and just be supportive of one another because they are all in it together. She then gave a shout to all the gossiping ladies out there to find something better to do and quit talking about a "certain Colonel's wife"! That was a great jab! Coincidentally while this was being said the scene cut to Marilyn who was listening in her car until she saw what she was waiting for or should I say WHO she was waiting for. Yup Marilyn was meeting Eddie. Even though she told Pamela that he broke it off awhile ago they had started up again. For someone who is so willing to spread gossip about everyone else, you would think she would have learned her lesson but no, she was resuming her affair. Meanwhile, the calls started coming in to the radio station. Pamela was enjoying herself and Major Casey was enjoying listening to her. The wives were starting to call in they were finally being heard and were taking advantage of the fact someone was willing to listen.
A very dramatic and exciting episode if I do say so myself! The preview for next week look great and the build up for the season finale has got me so excited! I don't want to have the season end but at the same time I can not wait to find out what the "shocking season finale" has in store for us! I can't wait!
