Brilliant? But Cancelled: John From Cincinnati

JohnFromCin_136.jpgMy friend and producer of the TV Cocktail video series, Rory, has been trying for weeks to get me to tune in to HBO's John From Cincinnati (starring Rebecca De Mornay and Bruce Greenwood). I keep asking him what the "dark surfer drama" is all about, and his standard response is, "I can't really explain what's going on, but I can't stop watching." Unfortunately for him (and me!) we might never know what's up with John. HBO cancelled the series after last night's fittingly mysterious finale.

E_LukePerry_68.jpgOn a side note, this also marks another failed show in the past year for 90210 alum Luke Perry. I interviewed him (about being naked!) right before his 2006 summer show Windfall, which was cancelled after one season as well. Hmm, maybe we'll see him on the next season of Dancing with the Stars a la Ian Ziering!

So, you tell me. Did you watch John From Cincinnati? If so, are you bummed it was cancelled? And more importantly, can you tell me what it's about!?!

The world is a mirror; every relationship, interaction & experience is a mirror. We construct our experiences; if we listen closely we'll recognize ourselves in everything as we project our deeper selves onto each experience. If we truly listen we'll hear the deeper needs being expressed at each moment.

John is a mirror; as is this show. Each character is a mirror. It is extremely difficult to recognize ourselves in others at every moment, and very easy to dismiss others for one reason or another; but when we deny the other we are denying ourself. When we dismiss the other we are dismissing an opportunity for intimacy. When we open up to the other and trust both ourselves & the other, we open up to the opportunity to transcend our limitations. The key is learning how to trust.

I'm super bummed it's canceled, but am grateful it was on. What is it about? The way I feel is that JFC offers a living lesson on recognizing & meeting the deepest of our needs as individuals, communities & as an all-encompassing entity.

My wife and I are the kiss of death for TV. If we love it--it's going to get cancelled. I could tell within two weeks of it first airing that this was going to get cancelled. It's just too good.

Yes, we loved it--for it's great writing, acting and directing. My wife commented that after the finale that that episode played more like poetry than prose.

Other shows we loved? Wonderfalls, Maximum Bob and the first season of John Laroquette (in the second season they tried to save it by making it more mainstream). Oh yeah, about a hundred years ago. Police Squad.

As this things go I'm sure Big Love will be cancelled too.

Yes, I'm extremely bummed it was cancelled. It's the most intrigueing thing on TV. Astonishingly entertaining. What's it about? Beats the hell out of me.

I just finished watching all ten episodes in a row. I love JFC! NOW...to find out that it's been cancelled???! WHAT?!

Even if I didn't understand everything that was happening all the time, I was hooked and couldn't turn off the television. This show sets the standards high for everything that comes after it.

JFC was one of the best shows on television, and now it's been cancelled. Who's brilliant decision was that? Honestly, HBO should be ashamed.

it was not that brilliant. it was ridiculous at times, i tried to like it. Rebecca de mornay was way over the top and I hated her character.

The only reason I'm sticking with HBO is Larry David. JFC was brilliant and HBO exec's have made a mistake. Compared to JFC, most other shows are pedestrian and boring.

I am so disappointed and po'd at HBO I may have to stop watching TV all together. JFC was perplexing, mind boggling, amazing and wonderful. I loved it.

I loved the show, but it did have moments that confused me. It kept me on the edge of my seat, but never delivered the punch that sent me over the top. I enjoyed the characters so much, that the lack of a plot didnt seem to matter.
Why would HBO cancel this show??? What do they have to offer us instead of it??
Deadwood was cancelled, Sopranos and Rome are over and Big Love has just 2 epidodes left this season. I'm just glad that Bill Maher is coming back or I would cancel HBO alltogether.

Someone should be fired over this!!

In an industry which has been decaying as opposed to progressing HBO was our one bright light, and now that light has dimmed. I think if more critics actually read a book once in a while they would have more patience for JFC and give the show its due respect for what it was trying to accomplish. Because television is not subordinate to time constraints like film you can have strong, wide ranging character development, and well thought out interwoven archs, and intersecting themes like you see in literature. TV could be one of the greatest artforms the world has ever seen, combining all three basic forms the visual, the auditory and the literary, but it will always be a disappointment as long as shows like JFC are cancelled. I will say JFC was too self indulgent, but so is all avant garde artforms. How is televsion ever supposed to fullfill its potential if we keep playing to the lowest common denominator? I guess there isn't room for shows like JFC when shows like Entourage get nominated for Emmy's.

Remeber what I said at the begining of the Show! The end is near!
Those where prophetic words.

Everything good comes to and end.
This show was excellent so it came to and end sooner than most.

I don't know butchie instead!

I hate HBO for cancelling the series. It was deep, man. And so well acted. Ed O'Neill was great and so was Bruce Greenwood and Austin Nichols. But the best of all was Greyson Fletcher -- the best looking hunk on television. He is so dreamy! He can surf on my ocean anytime!

We're only fragile vessels. Who understand "idols" and "Survivors". We don't listen to dialogue, so HBO crucified him on an El Camino....

IN the words of Butchie Yost.... HBO go F--- Yourself!!!

Someone in that company needs to be fired, every great show gets canned.

I agree!! Why does HBO pull practically ALL of it's great shows? I was really getting into JFC! It was intriguing, it had colorful characters. It was building up to an amazing climax. WTF??? After the end of Sopranos, it was great to be able to tune in to another interesting show again. Now....what?? HBO better have something good up it's sleeve! I'm just really bummed about this. I guess this gives David Milch time to work on those 2 Deadwood movies we've heard so much about! Yeah, right.....Thanks a lot, HBO! You suck!

CHRISTINA said:

IT SEEMS ANY TIME SOMTHING STRANGE AND DIFFERENT COME ALONG ITS GONE I LOVE JFC AND ITS HORRIBLE THAT THEY WOULD PULL THE SHOW WITHOUT ANSERING ALL THOSE QUESTIONS I GUESS MOST PEOPLE ARE JUST TO LAZY TO THINK WHILE WATCHING TV

I can not believe I have fallen into another HBO trap. I should have known better than to start watching another one of their shows, the way they leave us hanging is shameful. I will never fall for this again. For those of us who are looking for show, other than the reality crap most networks keep feeding us, I guess we will have to look elsewhere.

I'm glad that so many others feel as I do about JFC-it was great!!!! So- is everyone letting HBO know how they feel about the cancellation? DO IT!!! They did us wrong!

I loved the explanation that the first poster gave, but I do think there was more to it.
John was a mirror, but he was also a wave. At one time, Mitch caught a wave and wiped Cissy out....Cissy wiped Butchie out (and just about anyone else she came in contact with)...Butchie wiped Barry and Shaun out...etc.

The characters were working off of a negative wave that started before some of them were born. John's presence starts a new wave (NEW WAVE!) that helps the character overcome the thing that is holding them back physically, emotionally or spiritually.
A real healing process begins as a result of John's presence, and the community that once exploited one another, now comes together for good reasons (a parade, BBQ, search party).

What a great show....bound to get cancelled. Watch it again (and DVR it) while it is still on OnDemand. It really is worth watching a second time. Watch "Firefly" too...another GREAT show that was only given one season. When fans pushed and came together, a movie sequel was made.

This sucks. Finally a show I can relate to being that I grew up in Huntington Beach. This show was great. The characters and actors were great. HBO - I've got my eye on you. You are cancelling all the really great shows so I might have to cancel you. Bring back JFC. You never gave it time to gather the following that it deserved. Kai rules!
