First Impressions: Whoopi on The View

I really thought Whoopi Goldberg was going to make The View even more boring that it already was, but she's gone all Sister Act (loved that movie) and surprised me! On her first day, she brought about major controversy regarding the Michael Vick dogfighting charges, saying his, um, hobby was "not that unusual" in the South, where Vick is from. PETA's freaking out, people from the south are freaking out, we love it (not the dogfighting, obvi., but the drama!). Even fired cohost Rosie O'Donnell thinks Whoopi did good.

TheView_300.jpg

So, this season of The View appears to be off to a good start. Plus, Barbara Walters announced on air that the other empty seat (vacated when Meredith Vieira went to the Today Show last year -- love your blog, Mer!) will be filled next Monday, September 10.

Let's have it: What do YOU think of Whoopi's first two days on the job, and -- here we go again -- who do you think will be the next cohost to join The View? Sherri Shepherd? Kathy Griffin? Plus, what's your take on Whoopi's comments about Michael Vick?

Rosie was not fired from The View. All your other comments were right on but ya need to get all the facts straight.

Rosie and you can say what you want,,, But she was canned for being a dishonest wacko.

OK They Dropped her from the VIEW like the 350 lb Elephant she is.

What show were you watching? I watched the show for 7 years and today was my last day. Last season by far was the most fun out of all of them. Ever since Rosie left it's been all downhill. These first two days of the 11th season have been extremely boring. They made a huge mistake with the set too.

Adam said:

Why on earth would Rosie be fired from The View? She sent ratings through the roof! I've always loved Whoopi, though I'll admit she's not that interesting on the show yet. She needs time to settle in and 'get her groove back.' Fingers crossed that the new co-host (who will be filling Star Jones' seat, not Meredith Vieira's [she was the original moderator]) will be Sherri Shepherd. She'll spice things up a bit. Regardless of what happens, no one will ever be as captivating as Rosie. Ain't nobody can rock the boat like her.

Rosie knew that deep in the bowels of her fat ugly dyke ass, that she was going to fired from the show. So it was best for everyone that she quit on her own. Now she can go back to her tuna salads buffets gatherings.

After being "Forced" to take last year off (after the 9 first years) from watching - the past 2 days have been most welcomed!!!! :-)
The "Only" thing that could possibly "Ruin" it all now, would be that Kathy Griffin show up Sept. 10th!!!! :-(

Megan said:

I agree that Whoopi AND Rosie gave the show great ratings but the reasons for the ratings are horribly disturbing. The racial comments that Rosie made about the Asian race, and for Whoopi to say that what Michael Vick did was understandable because of where he is from? I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. It's not normal and to put the stero type out there that activities like this take place "where he comes from" is an absolute lie. If he is an American citizen, he is well aware of what is legal and what is not and he KNEW what he was doing was wrong and that's the difference. He tried feigning ignorance as his defense but he's a well known NFL superstar...you trying to tell me he didn't know it was illegal to make dogs fight each other and when they're hurt from the fight, to tie a toaster to their rear end and throw them in a pool??? That's cruel and I can't beleive anyone would EVER think that was ok. Gimme a break Whoopi

Sandra said:

Geeze, day 2. Whoopi spends the first five minutes acting as though everyone misunderstood her Michael Vick comments. Everyone who wrote any sort of comment about it was wrong. I think they heard it right, wrote what they heard and then got a scolding for not understanding what she meant to say. And they thought Miss Teen South Carolina didn't make sense.

Rebecca said:

I really hope Whoopi stays on the view...she is just great. Funny, but respectful, great views etc...

Lynne said:

Rosie O'Donnell probably quit the show because she couldn't go one hour without eating. I think she is obnoxious and very unprofessional.

Geri said:

Whoppie is very funny but this show

Cathy said:

The ratings are down. Last year the premiere was seen by 3.6 million people, this season it was 3.4 million.

Elisabeth got into a fight with the other three today. She is a trouble maker.

Laurie, I believe you as much as I believe pigs can fly. I know you watched last year, don't lie.

I have never posted before but I think Megan hit the nail on the head....pleading innocence to knowing that killing is wrong is ignorant and for Whoopi to defend Vick based on background is even more ridiculous. I bet if a white guy had done the same thing there would be no defending him for any reason. Killing is killing...no matter what background you come from.....we are not backwoods people that have to kill to eat....there is no reason for someone (no matter who you are) to kill anything intentionally, not animal or person. Just my 2 cents.

callieco said:

I don't know why Elizabeth is on the show. She is a nice type person, all the others are very liberal and stupid. And Whoopi, where is the "deep south"? Not Virginia! That is where Michael Vick was born and attended college! But no matter where the barbaric nut is from there is no excuse for the dog fighting to death and the intentious killing of dogs. The View has just turned into a bunch of gossiping magpies who just see who can out talk or out holler the other. The View is going down. I no longer watch it, I just heard about Whoopie's stupid remark. More Oprah and Leno!!!!

Cynthia said:

Whoopie never condoned Vick's behavior on "The View." I've watched the show all week and she never ONCE defended what he's done. In fact, she said exactly the opposite, that she did not approve.

To me, this is just like the difference between understanding why Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, including some of his own children (an explanation) but not excusing him for participating in slavery. We see how it happened but we know it wasn't right.

I have ADHD. It explains why being on time is challenging for me but it doesn't excuse me when I'm late to important meetings. I have to be better at managing my time and that's MY responsibility.

If there was any wrongdoing here, it was the Associated Press writer who wrote erroneously that Whoopie had "defended" Vick. How irresponsible. AP owes Whoopie an apology.

I'm all for holding people accountable (including myself) but let's have some compassion, too.

Marie9 said:

Love Whoopie! I agree with above post that she is very funny but still respectful and does not have to shout other people down. I am also looking forward to Sherri Sheppard; so glad it is not Kathy Griffin.

calico said:

Back to Whoopie, I didn't say she condoned what Vick did. She did say "things like dog fights are common where Vick is from." She said he was from the south, the deep south. Virginia is not the deep south. I am from the south and dog fights are not common here. But it doesn't matter to me if he is from the south or north, yellow, red, black, white or whatever. It is barbaric and he needs to be held accountable for his actions.

txsgrl070503 said:

I watched this particular show too, so how can you say that Whoopi did not condone Vick's actions? She said that him being from the south made it more understandable that he would think it was ok to fight dogs? That to me is defending. I am not sure where you get your definitions, but Webster's says...to defend is to support (an argument, theory, etc.) in the face of criticism; prove the validity of by answering arguments and questions. She supported Vivk when she tried to validate why he felt it was ok.

And let's talk about compassion....what compassion did Vick have for those animals? NONE! Put Whoopi in the same boat with him.

actually whoppi is in merideth's seat (the moderator). the last empty seat if left from star jones. i've watched the view for a longg time and always loved it, but rosie just brought a new life to it... i miss her. im just not that crazy about whoppi on the show. maybe it will be a little more lively when sheri shepard joins

bonita said:

I like Whoopi ordinarily but find her presence on The View EXTREMELY boring! Couldn't care less about watching it anymore! And will someone PLEASE tell Elizabeth that she has had ORANGE skin for the last several months? I've soooo had it with her too! They should get rid of her!

Karen said:

Sad but true Whoopi was correct about what she said. In the south dog fighting goes on all the time. It's not a racial thing because we see those involved in dog fighting rings get arrested all the time on the news in the south, black, white, mexican, etc. They don't care that its illegal that's why it goes on secretly. I'm willing to bet Vick is not the only famous person whose ever been involved in dog fighting he just got caught. Is it right,no not at all but they don't care. As far as Whoopi being on the View I really don't care, I stopped watching after Star left. I am however a big fan of Whoopi so keep doing what you do Whoopi. Luv Ya!

Sandy said:

I have never enjoyed the "View" until Rosie made it interesting and now its back to blah blah blah everyone talking at the same time. Whoopi is way to full of herself and then there is annoying Elisabeth. Good time a day to read. :-)

micky said:

whoopie is very very boring on the view. get her and elisabeth out. sheri shepard and joy will keep the show going. both are hilarious....still miss rosie, and if people admitted it, most do too. BYE Whoopie...go color purple again

Jennie said:

How could you get it so wrong? This is an OLD picture; they've changed the set back to the old, tired thing they had in the past. AND, Rosie wasn't fired, she QUIT. Get it right or don't pretend to "report". Love Whoopi, won't watch with the old (again) TIRED jokes of Sherri. Kathy Griffin would have balanced it out nicely.

lynn said:

Whoopi can make an excuse for Michael Vick for dogfighing by saying it is common where he comes from, but what about dog torture and murder? I'm in the south and I've seen several reports on the news over the years where people have been arrested for dogfighting but none of them sadistically tortured and killed the dogs for not winning a fight. There was one guy that shot his dog when he lost a fight (which is barbaric enough), but at least he didn't torture it to death. Vick obviously enjoyed watching the poor dogs die a slow, agonizing death .Dogfighting is cruel and illegal but what Vick did went way beyond that. He's one sick b**tard.

jen said:

Why would you want Elizabeth to leave. The show is called the View REMEMBER. There is more than just liberals in the world. Whoppie is a very respectful person, thank god Rosie is gone.

leigh said:

I can't believe people think Rosie was good for the show. It was about time she was fired. Whoppi will bring back alot of lost viewers. The View's ratings were down because of Rosie, she is an obnoxious pig and can't believe anyone liked her on the show other than people who are just like her. Thank god she's gone!

geo said:

I find Whoopi to be very boring so far on The View.
No one will match Rosie for excitement, but still now it's a big 'yawn.'

They just let midget-minded judgemental Elizabeth angrily spew her ignorance and Whoopi just watched her and is not engaging us with her strong views. Joy is still great. BW is so constantly PC that she throws a wet-blanket on things.

They need to fire it up or ratings will continue to drop.

Rita said:

Never watched the show. Looked boring. Never liked Barbara Walters or Rosie O'Donnell. Whoopie is great, but I will not watch the show because it's not a really interesting show.

Vet Smith said:

I am so glad that Whooopi is on the show. I love her and respect her so much. She is quite funny, level minded and respectfulo of her peers. I love Joy too, i think that Joy and Whoopi will be an excellent mix.
Elizabeth is young and not as informed as the other ladies. She certainly needs some education on Alcoholism. People are born an alcoholic, they don't just become one. I am a member of Al-Anon and have the disease in my family. I would love to see Elizabeth learn more on the subject. I am also a breast cancer survivor of 31/2 years after a left mastectomy. YA!!!!
I wish Whoopi much luck on her new journey. You Go Girl!!!! Thank You, Vet

I am appalled by Whoopie's remarks about Vick and his dogfights.

I have always like her, but this is terrible. I have lost respect for her. I would like to see her gone from the show.

I stopped watching after Starr left but couldn't be happier that Whoopi is on!! I love her and the girl is sharp (intelligent) and funny and will bring an excellent balance to the show. I miss having her on the air every morning, but glad to see her now! She and Joy are going to be dynomite!!! Just watch and see!! Whoopie can do no wrong and hardly ever say no wrong in my book!!! Love, Love, Love her!!!!

The ridiculous comments about weight and sexuality keep escalating on here.. isn't anyone allowed to be comfortable with who they are and not judged?

Thorne said:

I don't know whether or not, everyone watched the same thing... or people are just plain stupid and cannot comprehend a word of the English Language... but Whoopie clearly said that she understands why Vick thought that dog fighting would have been ok.... based on the culture that existed where he was from... to me that point is valid.... she never supported him or agreed with the act.. because let's face it... it's barbaric...But also at the end of the day, Vick is a grown man.. who knows right from wrong... and as a result he should pay for his actions.....

I was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Since I have lived in Roanoke, Virginia, St. Barths, Tortola, and Auburn, Alabama. I now live in the most southern region of Alabama. My point is that I live in the "deep South." IN NO WAY, SHAPE, FORM, OR FASHION is dog-fighting a culturally acceptable action. Inhumane humans reside everywhere and I resent Whoopi reducing the horror of Vick's actions to an cultural fallicy. I believe that Walters used the word 'Northerners' when refering to beauty pagents. Beauty pagents are tacky, but they do exist in the northern regions of the US. It was as if the ladies on the view were acting like beauty pagents (tacky) and dog-fighting (barbaric)ellude the north...

Rosie was the best. Period.

BETTYE said:

I am sick of all the Michael Vick talk. People have really got more bent out of shape over dogs death then when our children get killed.

It is might strange to me at the open of hunting season, all of you dog lovers find nothing wrong with killing animals for the fun of it with guns and think its ok to bet on dog and horse races, but you have made like Miachel Vicks committed the crime of the centry. You need to get real!

txsgrl070503 said:

Comparing dog fighting along with animals bred for fighting and hunting is ignorant. Hunting helps control the population of wild animals and most reputable hunters eat what they shoot. Breeding animals to fight and then torturing them because they don't win is totally a different story. The Washington Post quoted "Vick "executed approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in 'testing' sessions by various methods, including hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."
If I had ever heard of someone treating kids like that, that would be more barbaric than the Vick situation. All life is special and to so cruelly take it away should be punished more severely than a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Boring...Elizabeth is a Bush lover and if her husband was drafted to fight in Iraq she would be singing a different tune,Rosie was not fired she quit because she was sick of that idiot Elizabeth who is a whiney bore! The show has become a drag and Woopie is not going to save it. The set is so tired, the colors suck.Torture and Abuse of animals is one of the first things seriel murders usualy start off with, Why is it that some of you find it so fun to spew forth regarding another's weight or sexual orientation, there are so many of you locked in the closet, especially so many republicans Homos that vote against gay marrige, womens rights, blah, blah, blah, than they seduce pages, undercover officers, lie and cheat on there wives! At least Rosie is real, she was fun to watch and who gives a **** about whoopie, or sheri shepard? It would have been nice to get another host that was in a younger age range to balance elisabeths right wing bull****, not a bunch of has beens old crows! The View has become so Yesterday!

Megan said:

I know this is probably a waste of my time but I'm going to say a few things regarding some of the other comments made on here. To Vet Smith-You are not BORN an alcoholic. There is no solid proof that it is either genteic or envioronmental. Please don't chastise others when you don't even know the whole truth. Secondly, beauty pagents are HUGE in the south more than in the north anyways so I have NO idea where that came from. The idea of this blog is to post your opinions on what Whoopi did, not go all over the place with everything. We all have our own opinions, and wether they are right or wrong we aren't going to get people to change their views on things. Republican, Democrat, Liberal...we all have a voice and we should use it accordingly, not to bring other people down that voice theirs also. In a nutshell, if Whoopi defended Vick in any way, it was wrong. What he did was in no way, shape, or form acceptable and he needs to be held responsible and so does Whoopi for her comment.

Sherry is a delight and if just the three of them were on (without Barbara)
maybe they can survive. Don't forget,
they are on against everyone's favorite
ELLEN and every one loves her. We don't
want too much controversy at 10am we want some laughs and fun. Move your show to an earlier time or move off
Rachel Ray - she has gotten way to BIG
for her britches and she isn't the same
as when she first came on. Put her and
Kelly Ripa on a show at 4am.

Whoopi is stupid and Rosie was stupid. Well, the whole show is stupid for that matter.

Pat said:

Whoopie is doing a good job. She is always amusing, anyway, as her movies were. And her standup, etc. She is just likable, no matter what.
As for the south thing, and Vick, people pick out what they want to and to cause trouble--waiting to pounce. I live in the South and I knew what she was saying. But, NO, not everybody in the South is think of animals as garbage to be thrown out. But some get upset at even seeing a dog or cat living in the house and no matter the weather they are always kept outside. The rest of us bring them in. I live in the country and it is awful what I see go on. I started an animal welfare league because of it.

Rosie was good, Whoopie is good.

Monica said:

Whoopi can't keep control of all the comments and yelling. Everyone on The View is getting tiresome. Rosie may have been controversial but at least she was "for real".

I will never watch The View again,in light of the stupid excuses Whoopi made in Michael Vicks "defense". She supports Vicks, I choose to support the poor animals he so cruely murdered.

Rosie is too mouthy and Whoopie will not be much better. This show is going down like a slow ship. I don't like sexual preference or color forced on me. Whoopie is a "token" just as "Rosie" was.

I used to look forward to watching the View when Rosie was on because it was controversial. Now it's just boring and neither Whoopi nor Sheri do anything to save the show. they are both kind of boring. Thank God for Joy. Sigh...................

Dee said:

I like Whoopi, but I think there are too many talk shows these days in general, they all tend to fall into the same old blah, blah. As far as Rosie's year on The View, if you find that kind of noise, controversy, and in your face crap entertaining, you should not be watching The View because your personality would be better suited for the Jerry Springer show.
