American Idol Announces Changes For Upcoming Season
When Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell return in January for the next season of American Idol, prepare to see some changes.
According to AI executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, mistakes were made last year on American Idol, so here are a few things they're going to do to shake up our favorite obsession:
*Letting singers who have other musical talents, such as guitar playing to show off those talents.
*Possibly combining the annual Idol live tour with the So You Think You Can Dance tour.
*Losing the ‘mentors’ like Barry Manilow and Diana Ross who were on the show every week and left very little time for the audience to get to know the contestants.
"We got such good mentors [last season] that we forgot about . . . getting across who these kids were, their backgrounds and families," Lythoe says. "I want to know about the kids, what makes them tick, what got them singing,” he said.
I think letting us get to know the contestants more intimately is a great idea, but if you want to fix a problem, then how about making sure the Top 10 contestants don't suck like they did last year. How about that for a change?

I got all excited when I read Idol Changes.
I thought for sure they would change the scoring, and having the judges have some say the whole way thru so we dont have another Votefortheworst.com or Sanjaya episode.
Why would they not do that??
