TV Recap: Ugly Betty
The theme of this week’s Ugly Betty is self revelations! Hilda gets a new job as a hairstylist at Bumble and Bumble but for some reason doesn’t seem as excited as she should be. Meanwhile, Henry and Betty are still struggling to keep their relationship secret. She asks Christina for advice- What if you want to eat donuts even though you know they’re bad for you… but they’re just sooo good and sooo… “Henry is your donuts!” Good job Christina.
The Sandwich Man returns with phase one of his big dream- he’s now opening Gio’s Sandwiches, complete with flyers and a pickle with a smiley face.
It’s CODE FUCHSIA in Wil’s office, because her daughter Niko called and said she’s not going to the wedding, meaning Wil has no Maid of Honor. Marc’s photographer boyfriend Cliff shows up at Mode wanting to make dinner arrangements but Marc is embarrassed and sends him off. To avoid being seen with Cliff at dinner, he offers to stay late and help Wil at the office.
Daniel catches on fast that there is something going on between Henry and Betty. Being the good boss he is, he gets super protective and tells her that if she is getting her heart broken again by Henry, she’s going to have to fire him!
While she secretly tries to get tickets for the sold-out play Wicked, Daniel hears the mention of “office romance” and gets suspicious. She tells Daniel that she’s dating… (and the first guy she sees is…) the Sandwich Guy!
As a surprise, Daniel gets Betty tickets to Wicked for her and her “boyfriend”. The only problem is that Gio refuses to give her both tickets, and keeps one for himself. What a jerk! Somehow I feel like he’s maybe a little jealous of Henry…
Tired of being the screw-up in the family, Daniel gets a tip from a hot photographer on how to schmooze his way into ads for Mode. Everyone arrives in pairs at the theatre- Henry and Betty, Sandwich Guy and his sister, and Daniel and the older-but-rich-and-can-save-Mode-lady, Sandra Winthrop. Still trying to play up their act, Betty is forced to sit with her “boyfriend” Gio, right beside Daniel and the Rich Old Lady. Just because they’re not together doesn’t mean they can’t communicate- oh how I love text messaging. “You’re about to hear a sneeze, that’s me saying hello” – so nerdy, but so cute! Daniel tries to put a move on his client Sandra, saying it’s the only way he knows how to save the magazine- a.k.a. Daniel is a manwhore.
Justin discovers why his mom isn’t so enthused about her job- she’s working at a Hooters-like restaurant as a waitress, not as a hairstylist! As if her “Freshly squeezed” and “Hi beams” tanks didn’t give it away! BUSTED. Apparently, she got fired at Bumble and Bumble, and didn’t last a day at the other salon- this was the only job she could keep.
Cliff shows up at the office again with dinner for Marc, and wants to be introduced to Amanda. The three encounter each other, Amanda shocked thinking that Cliff ate Marc’s actual boyfriend, Cliff pissed that Marc is still denying their relationship, and Marc just flustered. The encounter ends in a break-up, because Cliff has more respect for himself than that.
So remember what I said about the theme this week being revelations? Let’s recap:
Henry and Betty step out of the theatre for a bit, and Henry confronts Betty. All she keeps talking about is how sad she’s going to be when Henry leaves, but she never realized how sad Henry would be in having to leave her. Awwwww. Totally melting.
Marc rants to Amanda about losing Cliff, and it seems that Marc really did like his personality but couldn’t get past his own insecurity. Marc doesn’t want to be sad and alone like Wilhelmina, having her own daughter make up an excuse to skip her wedding. Just then, the toilet flushes and Wil steps out. Dun dun dun!!
Back at the theatre, Daniel wants to seduce Sandra for ads but she wants to hear his points for why she should switch over. Daniel has a little epiphany and decides he has to stay true to himself like Betty said. But it turns out there’s no need to seduce her, because Sandra is turned off by smart guys like Daniel, and she’s convinced and will be sending her ad rep over on Monday.
Betty and Henry end up backstage and on a huge moving stage prop that has the entire audience gasping. As they get kicked out of the theatre, Daniel appears to confront Betty.
Daniel is pissed that Betty lied to him and calls her stupid for doing what she’s doing. Ouch!
“I don’t think I can do this” she says to Henry who is waiting for her with a cab outside.
She goes back home to Hilda and gets some sound advice. She shouldn’t be wasting her time worrying about what other people think if she only has 5 months left with a man that loves her, she should go get him cause the clock is ticking!
Papi and Justin save money to surprise Hilda with a salon chair! Now she can start her own business and quit that trashy waitress job!
Enlightened by Hilda’s advice and with the Wicked soundtrack playing in the background, Betty shows up at Henry’s door. The passion in their eyes is killing me. They make out. And she goes into his apartment…
Lesson of this episode: stay true to yourself!
1. Don’t be a trashy waitress if you really want to be a hairstylist
2. Go for the guy even though you’re going to get your heartbroken and even if the guy got another girl pregnant
3. Don’t be a manwhore
4. Don’t be ashamed of your tubby photographer boyfriend!
