TV Recap: Ugly Betty
What better way to bring back Ugly Betty but with an episode surrounding fashion week! Justin’s class comes in for a tour of Mode but the teeny boppers seem to be more interested in what Gisele is eating than the world of publishing. The tweeners skip lunch when a clan of near-anorexic models walk by and give them a severe dose of thinspiration. Disgusted by the tweeners’ obsession with weight, Betty makes a brave proposal to Daniel about using real, healthy models as a theme for their show at fashion week. Milan did it last year- and Daniel would get a ton of publicity for Mode while Betty can help change the perspectives of young girls everywhere- a win-win situation for both!
Meanwhile, an extremely emotional Wil who craves rocky road ice cream a little too excessively is taking hormone shots in hopes to pop Mode’s new heir. “Turn around and bend over!” Marc commands. At the doc’s office, the doctor tells Wil that they’d be lucky if they even retrieve one viable egg. Medically speaking, Wil has a “hostile womb”. But of course, a bright idea emerges while Wil gets a pedi- her pedicurist Brandy has had five children herself- the perfect solution to her problem.
Speaking of problems, Amanda is still in a desperate search for her father. She enlists the help of Marc who takes her to psychic, Linda. Her only piece of wisdom? That Amanda will rescue a black dog. Betty has a surprise encounter with guest star Lil Bow Wow in the elevator- or I mean, Bow Wow since he has since dropped the “Lil” being a grown man now and all… The elevator breaks down and Mr. Wow has Betty swooning over his rap skills (while shamelessly promoting his forthcoming new album). Mr. Wow leaves Betty with a lil’ kiss on the cheek when Amanda comes to the rescue- clue #1 solved: Amanda rescues a black dog- Bow Wow! Amanda has another rendezvous with psychic Linda, who gives her three clues:
1. Follow the letter B
2. The B will lead you to a kiss
3. The kiss will lead you to your father
Christina faces another set of problems when Henry tells her that the company insurance will not cover her husband’s medical. Poor thing needs a hundred grand for her husband’s mysterious illness. Does anyone think that Stuart is a little bit sketchy? Who knows if he really is sick?
At the board meeting Alexis completely shoots down Daniel’s healthy models idea for the show. Simply because Daniel is her brother- and since she’s the boss now, she can call all the shots. Totally mature, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the Meade siblings. Instead of a paintball war this time, the winner of a pissing contest has say. Of course, Daniel has better aim, seeing as he has the… more suitable genitalia now for aiming purposes. During the press conference, Alexis and Daniel invite a slew of (still) very thin models they claimed were “healthy” to step up on the scale. What appeared to be healthy was all but a deception- the scale was rigged to add 20 pounds to whoever steps on it. An upset Betty confronts Alexis, until she learns that it was Daniel’s idea to rig the scales. Disappointed in Daniel’s decision, he tells her that rigging the scales was the compromise. While Betty delivers her heartfelt speech of how much this meant to her, he starts seeing the young girl she used to be- wearing an oversized tee at a pool party and eating chips. Are those tears we see in Daniel’s eyes?
The following night, Daniel shows up at Betty’s door to hand-deliver invitations for the show. Betty will be the co-host of the Mode show featuring real women! A secret take over is set in place (with code names and all) without the knowledge of Alexis. “Beauty truly is one size that does fit all” Daniel adds. Guest stars Bow Wow and Omarion get the crowd pumping as they rap while the women walk. The show turned out to be a great success, but it seems the teeny boppers were unmoved. Leader of the pack Lindsay called the women “fat and disgusting”, leaving Betty looking heartbroken. But- one of the boppers return while escaping the view of Lindsay to tell Betty that the show “didn’t totally suck”.
Amanda’s search continues until she realizes, B is for…Betty! The next step is the kiss- Betty questions a psychic’s advice to which Amanda replies “It’s magic and like science, you don’t have to understand it you just have to believe it!” Amanda insists that they should kiss to Betty’s disagreement (sorry boys, this is no O.C). After a rare heart-to-heart moment between the two about losing loved ones, Betty picks up a photo of one of the potential fathers who fell off her wall. The mystery is solved! The photo is of Gene Simmons of Kiss- GENE SIMMONS IS AMANDA’S FATHER!
A date night with Marc and Clay leads to the adult section of a video store. To everybody’s surprise, Brandy (the surrogate mother to Wil’s child) is also a part-time porn star! Brandy is fired because she doesn’t want a dominatrix as her surrogate mother.
Who will be the right candidate? Hmm…Christina??
Lingering thoughts…
1. Will Christina be Wil’s surrogate mom? Saving her husband this way may mean helping Wil to take down Mode…
2. Did this episode send out a positive message about reforming the fashion industry?
3. Is Gene Simmons really Amanda’s father?! (Possible guest star for next ep?)
