10 American Idol Boys Recap: Can't 'Imagine' a Better Idol

David Hernandez really laid it down for us with "Papa was a Rolling Stone."
This performance was as hot as that gay stripper buzz that's been stirring. Hernandez showed so much personality. And there's so much depth to his voice.
David Cook was another contestant that was so comfortable up there. He owned the stage, rocked out on his guitar and threw the pick at his adoring fans! "It's Alright" was the song. And he did it up -- more than just alright.
We learned a little tidbit from Cook, he calls himself a "word nerd" because he likes crossword puzzles and such. Simon told him he thinks that tid bit didn't help him. Come on? Doesn't Simon know that real ladies love and really appreciate a smart man?
Luke Menard brought out the talent with "Killer Queen." He has the high register to pull it off. It was a killer performance! What a vocal! He's been honing his craft for years. For the past 6 of them, Menard's been on the road with his acapella band, "Chapter Six." Last week he wasn't all that. So it is so good for him that this week he showed us he's more than just a pretty face.
With "I Believe" Chikezie Eze convinced his fans to keep believing. He too didn't do very well last week either.
But tonight he was back. Simon told him he looked better and sounded better. Last week Chikezie wore an orange suit. He defended it then as he did again tonight. Simon told him that if he loved that suit so much he should wear it again. Eze quiped to the snarky judge -- You can't wear it twice -- replay -- only you can do that. HA!
There was also friction between Simon and Danny Noriega last week. You can't say the same again. "You stand out in the crowd.. and look good on camera," Simon told him.
Noriega sang the Carpenter's version of "Superstar." And he sounded like one too. Randy made a good point, don't think about what you want to do. Just do it. His bravado is impressive, but Randy (and Paula) could tell he was trying too hard.
Michael Johns, for the first time, geeked me out. He told the audience that it has always been a dream of his to sing Fleetwood Mac. hu? A dream? Anyway, oh well, that's easily forgotten. He performed "Go Your Own Way."
Am I alone, or did anyone else think something wasn't going Johns own way tonight? He seemed to be struggling with a mic that wasn't quite working -- and I think he tried to overcompensate.
Jason Castro looks real comfortable up there with his guitar. The judges asked him, why not next week -- you sing wihthout a guitar.
There are only two more contestants to review and I really think that they'll be the ones to go. It'll be very coincidental for the ultra confident Robbie Carrico.
Carrico sang "Hot Blooded" and I think he got Simon's blood boiling. Carrico's authenticity has been questioned a lot lately. Is he pop? Is he rock?
Carrico says there are different forms of rock and just because he doesn't fit into Simon's perception, doesn't mean he's not a rocker. So in his words, "get used to it." We may not need to for long. What a turn off!
This guy can't seem to turn it on. But we know that he has it.
The train could stop here for Jason Yeager. His performance of "Long Train Runnin" was almost as boring as last weeks number... whatever it was. Simon called it awkward and ordinary.
Are you thinking... what I'm thinking? What's your take?

He's the best!
Chikeze was hot
The first two verses of Imagine each have an anti-religion line. The third doesn't. I think either David is himself religious or didn't want the message to cloud the listener's opinion of his performance. I thought it was a wise decision and a brilliant performance.
I'm absolutely disgusted by the performance. I think he should be ashamed for leaving out the more important messages of the first two verses. What a total cop out. Lennon is rolling in his grave at this abomination.
The fact is David is a mormon and Lennon was against religion and patriotism - two things mormons blindly embrace. As someone who strongly believes in the first verses of the song I think it was kick in the face to those of us who know religion and patriotism are just a powerful means of brainwashing. He lost my votes and my respect.
Danny Noriega is Jessica Alba's doppleganger! Here's the evidence. I'm convinced! hahaha.
David is a Mormon. I thought he was awesome last night.
ra, what are you talking about disgusted? A cop out.
Bet you aren't as talented.
His performance was absolutely stunning. He took the Beatles and brought them to a new generation. It is a testimony to his collosal potential as a superstar, and a testimony to the type of " song-shaped gifts" offered by the Beatles exemplified in this song that just keep on giving:
With his deft vocal skill and powerful passion, he did for this Beatles song what Alyssa Kaess did for this song about Beatles songs:

I can't believe everybody liked "Imagine." I thought that was absolutely horrible. He sang it like a pagent contestant and took the essence out of the song. Now I know why so many professional singers and musicians hate this show. I would never listen to him on the radio or see him in concert. If he should win, he'll be another Rubin or Taylor... and never heard of again. (Hopefully)

Jennifer,
Nothing personal, but how you could call last night's performance of "Imagine" 'horrible' is beyond me. Were we listening to the same song?
I actually agree with you both. At first, I fast forwarded through (dvr) it bc I love that song and thought it was going to be totally lame. But when all the judges praised him, I rewound it and thought it got pretty good by the end. At least he has pipes, but I don't think he's as versatile as Danny. I think these two might end up finalists, both very young with lots of fan base potential. I also predict that Idol karaoke is going to get really big this season (www.techtogo.com) because Randy (and once Simon) keeps mentioning karaoke. Lots of tricks up their sleeves, these Idol advertisers...
I have to admit at first I was not a fan of David. I did think he was good but being so young I thought he would fall apart. I was wrong. The longer he stays on the better he gets. He outsang (if that is even a word) every other contestant last night. I had a few other favorites and one of them really let me down last night but when David sang I totally forgot about all the others. I am not sure about the first two verses of the song being anti religious but God Bless David if he choose the best verse for his performance. ra if you can have your opinion but David should be allowed to sing what he wants. I for one loved it and never gave a second thought to what the first two verses were.
Who cares if he's a Morman? He's a damn good singer. The Castro kid is always stoned. Anyone else notice that? We talk about it all the time. The rocker will leave tonight I hope he does. Good comparison with katherine mcfee's Wiz song and David Archuletta last night. We remember good songs like that. I liked when David saw the first season and sang for him when he was younger. Kelly Clarkson was so sweet to him and I think that's nice. The girls will be singing soon. I'll be back to comment again.
Ra, you need to get your facts straight when it comes to putting religions down. you sound like an idiot.
you are so good!! one down and i think you are right about the second being gone. Alexandrea just got cut, did it look like she pulled away from ryan very abruptly!!! that other chic should have went she was terrible last night, but again, i really hate this song alexandrea is singing. bad choice, such a shame. loved the davids, carly was great last night, we shall see. great commentary and i loce the pics :)
Archie's going to win it!!! You were right even back then. He's in the finals tonight and he's going to beat David Cook.
