American Idol Results: The Wrong Song

It all came down to the wrong song for four contestants this week.

Jason Yeagar, Robbie Carrico, Alexandrea Lushington and Alaina Whitaker all picked the wrong song.  And didn't showcase the best of what they have to offer.

Here's a broken down Jason Yegar, getting consoled by Paula.

Yeager is a good guy and a really good singer.  It looks like his nerves got the best of him in this competition.  And he also needed to find that perfect song... which he never did.

Something Yeager said that impressed me was how he was trying to find "the song" to break out his guitar skills.  I liked that he didn't just pick any song to show off with... or every song (which gets old too).  He was strategically planning what he was going to do.

A good lesson learned here though is -- you can't wait.  Every week should be treated as if it's your last.

AlexandreaLeaves.jpg   Alexandrea Lushington would have still been alive... had she picked the right song.  She was one of Randy's favorite of the bunch.  She had a very cool way about her and was a lot of fun.  Paula is right though, It's not the end.  "It's never the end on this show.  It's the beginning of your career so rock it."

Robbie Carrico rocked it for the last time on the Idol stage.  This week we saw him get a little too arrogant with the whole "get used to it" crack.  Simon said it all comes down to authenticity and "the public saw what we saw.  It never felt real."

But I have to add, Simon, if it never "felt real" why would he make it this far?

Alaina Whitaker says she couldn't sing herself off the show... she was too emotional and embarrassed.

But after a little prodding.. she grabbed that mic...hey!  The song got off to a rocky start, but by the end she was back to her hammy self.

Big time guest artists were announced for the second annual Idol Gives Back show -- like Snoop Dogg!  Other musicians include: Smiley-Miley Cyrus (aka Hanna Montana), Mariah Carey, AI season 5's Chris Daughtry, and season 4's Carrie Underwood.  Actors like Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon are also getting involved.

Who's buzzing about what out there?  Does anyone have any American Idol scoop they'd like to share?

I am curious how David Archuleta got the best song and a song he knew and sang on a tv show when he was 13. While the others had to learn a new song, he gets handed a song he knows backwards and knows he can deliver. Favouritism at its worst. The producers must be careful of their blatant attempts at swaying the public, otherwise it could backfire on them.

Although enough can never be said about song choices, we also have to the consider the "Freakonomics" of the demographic split between the voting audience. There's a huge Country music demographic out there not being served this season. There's also a large Urban-Soul-R&B demographic with a many choices currently.

Lushington is a far better singer technically than Overmyer, but Lushington has to share her voting demographic with more contestants, so she gets split early.

In season 6, Stephanie Edwards was eliminated before Gina Glockson & Haley Scarnato. Edwards was a much better singer technically, but she was competing for votes with a few other voters in her genre, and suffered the demographic split.

I credit this more than the Vote For the Worst factor. Song choice is soooo important though.

Consider that Overmyer got a free week. For her, song choice is gonna be more important than for anyone from now on. Her lack of range and versatility makes her a specialist-- but only if she picks tunes especially right for her. She has no margin for wrong song choices, but she has a voting demographic which will carry her if she can nail tunes which fit her.

Christy Cook should go hardcore Country in order to survive, otherwise it's rockers and soul, and she can't compete in those genres with the current contestants. Robbie Carrico would have survived last night with a heavy Country tune.

Although Idol doesn't give us a weekly voting breakdown, you can Google the name of each contestant and count the results. Amanda Overmyer had the 3rd highest Google search results for the ladies as of 2/28. Although Google results shouldn't necessarily embrace voting results, attention is attention.

Don't they pick their songs?

Stratoblaster is exactly correct. If there are more than a few contestants singing the same type of song they do eliminate each other one at a time. Each one appeals to a certain group. I gues you would be ahead to be unique.

I am not surprised about the four who were voted off. But I could say that about several groups of four. There are a few I would be shocked to see go. But for now the voters are picking people they feel some attachment to (not always vocal)in a few weeks it will come down to real talent

That Ronnie rocker guy really pissed me off this week. He came off like a cheeseball with that comment you mentioned. Now he'll hit rock bottom like Brit.
