Super Tuesday: Atlanta Wins American Idol
Twenty four states held their caucuses in today’s Super Tuesday contest for the next President of the United States.
Seven states have now held its “primary elections” for the next American Idol.
I’m projecting Season 7’s winner will come out of the Atlanta auditions.
My spin…
The guy who lives in his car could really pick up steam in this competition.
Josiah Leming is a little rough around the edges, but I see something there.
His singing style, to my recollection, has not been portrayed as a genre on AI.
I’m talking about a successful candidate using it as his “platform,” not like a Blake Lewis mixing it up and singing a Keane song.
This kid conversed like a good ole boy from Tennessee, but sang with a heavy British accent. He interested all three judges and myself.
Randy, however, did make the remark that Josiah would sound good with a band.
But that’s what they said about Chris Daughtry too and look how far he made it in Season 5.
Speaking of the rocker, Paula commented that Amanda Overmyer was the female Chris Daughtry. Randy gave the biker chick a trillion percent yes! With Amanda’s raspy voice, I found her occupation coincidental. She’s a nurse who teaches people about respiratory illnesses.
We all love a candidate who can overcome adversity. And this one can sing too! Asia’H Epperson‘s father died in a car crash just days before her audition. “How Do I Live Without You” was the song she performed and dedicated to her father. Despite the pain, her voice was brilliant. Her determination was moving.
What’s a race with out the double talking express? Josh Jones’ occupation: he works with glass. He claims he has a passion for it. Even if he’s a successful singer, he says he still would want to do things involving glass. BUT THEN, the dork turns around and says if he makes it – he’d toss his glass cutter. Flip. Flop.
He sang, “Don’t Stop Me Now,” but Simon couldn’t help but stop him... three times. Josh was creeping him out with his eyes. So, the singer was asked to sing with his back towards the judges. Paula was digging it. All of it. So Randy played along too, and they put him through.
Don’t dial for Josh. He’ll just split the votes.
Never before in the history of American Idol has this happened, but I liked someone I saw in one of those goofy montages. Later in the show, they showed another snippet of this guy, and I still liked him. He was the one with red hair and black rectangle glasses. Very unsuspecting.
Miss So. Florida Fair squealed when she was nominated to the next round. Brooke Helvie hugged all three judges and voiced her concern that she might have strained her vocal cords. Oh my! Simon called her “possibly the most annoying.” But a contestant from last year quickly flashed in my head as even worse – the petty Amanda Collucio (Antonella Barba’s BFF).
Brooke won’t be winning any popularity contests in this general election. That’s for sure.
I can see it now – Brooke Demands a Recount.
Right now we are canvassing. We’ll be voting for these contestants soon. What do you look for when you pick your favorite? How much does personality play a role?
I witnessed an interesting focus group yesterday. In this one -- most of the people trusted and believed in Barack Obama. More than half the room said they were voting for him in today’s Super Tuesday elections. Then, they were asked to name something he’s accomplished and they couldn’t. Not one of them.
Their decision was based on what their gut told them.
That’s how we do it for American Idol, right? Of course there has to be talent, but for the most part, we follow our instincts.
OPINION POLL: What is yours telling you?
As if we haven’t seen enough, tomorrow is the “best of” the auditions.
Next week, it’s Hollywood!

This was really well written.
I can vote for the first time this year. I am actually getting excited about the prez election. I have been voting for American Idol for the past six years. I guess that's my practice. My vote goes to the girl who lost her dad.
Obama has not done anything. That's why they couldn't answer.
Hillary for President! She won yesterday. it was close this time, but wont be the next.
American Idol is for losers. American politics is hot!
My gut says McCain for president. And someone from Omaha for the American Idol winner.
The last guy who lived in his car is going to be cut first round in Hollywood. That girl everyone cried for will be in the top 3.
Ms FL is very annoying, but she had a nice singing voice. I thought she was going to be bad.
How about a black man for president and a woman for vice president. I say Randy for Pres. and Paula for VP. Simon would be a great Secretary of Defense. Let Simon run wild with all the weapons that he has. Let Randy keep the peace with the people. Paula, well, she'll shed a tear, and probably get some juicy articles on Page 6 in the post to keep us all humming her tune.
I agree about Josiah. My pro with him is how he sang Chasing Cars on the spot. Cool as a cucumber... not even a song he practiced... it just came to him when Simon asked for it. And that was before he had any idea if the judges liked him, and they stopped him pretty early in his tryout. Most people can't even remember the words of the songs they came to sing. He had every reason to get nervous, but he stayed calm and sang. That, more than singing talent, is what makes stars different from most people. My con with him is how he cried. Not so much that he cried, but why did he cry and does he have confidence issues? Not sure I totally get his story... but it seemed strange. Like maybe there was more to the story that we did not know about. People always want to know the whole story. Things will surface about him. But... he will be in a band and he will end up over the next 10 years making way more than the winner (if he is not the winner).
girl who lost her dad- i don't know if she is emotionally ready for the pressure of the show. it really can't be underestimated what intense pressure it is for an average joe to walk in to such a spotlight.
i have serious concerns about her stability. but who knows.
could any of you do it?
Treadway is dead on!
The Biker chick's voice needs a lot of work. But she'll make for good TV.
How funny. My gut tells me Josiah will do well.
my gut tells me it's dinner time
Difficult to get the page to accept comments. This is my third try.
I agree that Josiah is very good, but they all seem to step up as the competition goes on so I will wait. This is kind of like the elections. We are all waiting to see which of the candidates comes up with the best ideas before we decide. It is great to see everyone paying so much attention to the issues. Should be a great year for both events. G
I said it before that it was to ealy to pick and that every one changes but now I have to say Atlanta did shine. I loved biker chick and the kid who lives in his car. I think the tears are a combo of many things. Things are heating up
Great recap. I love the Political twist. I makes all this political stuff a little more fun
I think I remember you being introduced a few years ago as being POLITICO. I see you are still at it. Great recap. I loved the comparison to Super Tuesday very well done. I think now I have a clearer view of who I want for AI than I do for President. All I can say is that I hope they improve with time like the AI contestants do
Loved it, loved it, loved it. So far I have not been able to think of any of the contestants as winners until last night. I loved Amanda she seems to have a lot to offer - WoW is right she will be entertaining. Gothics eve I agree with you - it is going to be hard for Asia to cope with the pressures of the competition but I pray she will find the strength to go on. I don't think Josia will go in the first round in Hollywood. He is so relaxed. After all anything has got to be better than living in your car. He will be driven!!!
Brooke demands a recount! lol
No way Jose'
What a great year for America. Real change.
What an interesting way to bring us the American Idol news!
I'm going to show this site to my daughter and her friends who get together to watch American Idol in their dorm room.
Maybe they will get more excited about the presidential election. That's like pulling teeth. And I thought all young people are getting into the election this year? She has no interest and I have not been able to convince her how important it is to vote this term. She sees all the presidential candidates as the same. Honestly, that's how I see the contestants in this show.
