American Idol Recap 80's Style: When Partying Like it was 1999 Seemed SO Far Away!

The boys felt the beat of the rhythm of the night!  All of them kicked it into high gear tonight -- jamming out to the songs of the 80's.  It's funny to think some of the contestants weren't even alive when these songs were hot!

The guys did artists proud like: Lionel Richie, Simple Minds, Phil Collins and Whitney Houston.  Yes, I said Whitney... and Luther.  I waited all this idol time for someone to do a Jeff Buckley song on American Idol.  Even something covered.  Fantastic!  But now I want more... so Jason Castro, sing it baby!  I've really liked Castro's song picks throughout this entire season.  Tonight he was without his guitar and held strong.

"Hallelujah" was a brilliant choice.  The story about his dreadlock falling out at dinner though.  Ick.  I'm wondering what kind of skills he had -- to get that second date with the girl?

16Castro.jpg"All Coming Back to Me" is a power ballad.  And who better to sing it than the powerhouse himself, David Hernandez!  Hopefully people out there were listening to his amazing vocal talent and not too wrapped up in his "other talent."

16Hernandez.jpgOk, so we've got this "Dirty Dancer" so to speak.  Can you think of a better segue into 80's night?  This should be golden for Hernandez.

I tell ya... all this talk about season 2's Frenchie Davis...  Come on!  There is a huge difference between him being a male stripper and her nude on a website designed for men to look at YOUNG, underaged girls.  Gross.  There's a fine line there of perverted deviancy (not necessarily on her part, but the website) verses a job as a stripper... for men, women.. whoever.  Who cares.

Especially with most of the semi-professional-type contestants this year.  I'm more put off by someone who's already been signed than this nonsense.  It makes for a good story though.  Some good gossip, but it's insignificant.  Hernandez, however, is an extremely significant part of this competition.  A keeper.  A top three contender.

The 80's were the epitome of Star Search wannabees, Fame and Solid Gold.  David Archuleta wasn't even born yet... but  his Star Search moment waited for him.  His American Idol time is now.

16Archuleta.jpgArchuleta started off "Another Day In Paradise" singing and playing the piano.  This kid is smooth.  I loved just how gracefully he got up from the piano and grabbed the mic.  He made the song his own... like he does every time.

Speaking of owning it (again), David Cook brought his own rock flavor to "Hello."  Wow, he did so much with that soft Lionel Richie song.  He looked absolutely amazing too.  The inflection was spot on!  Not too much.  Just enough.  The perfect amount.  All the judges thought it could be remade into a hit today.  Now that's what this competition is all about!  A memorable, integral, defining moment of season 7.  Smoking.

16Cook.jpgMichael Johns said tonight that he wants to define himself as an artist.  He's done well with that thus far.  He sang, "Don't You Forget About Me."  Don't you worry.  There is no way anyone is forgetting about anything Michael Johns is offering this competition.

16Michael.jpg
Simon asked Chikezie Eze if the song he sung was a Whitney Houston song, "All the Woman I Need."  When Chikezie started laying down the history... the smug judge harped again -- and started critiquing.  Simon was trying to make the point (no matter what) that he shouldn't be singing a Whitney song, but wasn't listening that the great Luther Vandross sang his version.  It "wasn't a smart move, personally," uttered Simon.

It was excellent.  I have really enjoyed seeing the different strengths of Chikezie.  I like how he switches it up each week.
16Chikezie.jpgDanny Noriega himself for me is getting a little (to take the letters from his mouth) TMTH.  Although I laugh from time to time... the whole attitude is way too much to handle.

16Noriega.jpg
But in this singing competition his rendition of "Tainted Love" was very entertaining.  There was a lot going on.  Totally energetic!  But I think Noriega and Luke Menard may not have what it takes to stay alive.

Luke did Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go."  I hate that these are the lyrics he'll be singing us out to this week.  Luke is great and all, he just doesn't have that "grab ahold of" quality about him.
16Luke.jpg80's week is always one of my favorite parts of American Idol.  The songs are either so energetic and fun, or so dripping with soap operaesque love (deep voice love) that it's exciting and entertaining.

It's simply irresistible to get caught up in all of that.

Bust a move on... the jelly bracelets, teased hair and break dancing (now wouldn't that be gnarley)!
The boys may have known what Willis was talkin 'bout, but I have a feeling the girls tomorrow night will be just as dy-no-mite.

I can't imagine the girls touching the greatness of last night's show. I watched it 3 times (minus the judge's comments) it was amazing minus Luke. He is definitely out this week.

Are there going to be two girls and two boys leaving again this week?

I was so floored by how great last nights show was and I really think they should just vote off whoever is the bottom 4 regardless if they are in the guys or girls group. There is more talent in the guys group and it sucks that someone good will have to go just because of the group thing!

I absolutely love David A. but so many guys did amazing last night. All 3 Davids were great and I really hope Danny doesn't go, he brings a little pizazz to the show. I like him...not to win but to stick around for awhile. he is a great performer and you can tell he loves the lime light. Luke was the only one I didn't like last night. I don't want any other guy to go!! This sucks they are all really good. The girls better step up but i don't think they are going to be able to touch the performances of the guys.

LOVE!!!! The 80's too. This was the best week by far. The girls have nothing on these guys.

My favorite is MICHAEL JOHNS! YUM!

The three Davids are doing it for me!! Cook, Hernandez and Archuleta ... in that order. I, personally, don't see how Luke Menard even made it onto the show!? Other than him ... I dig all of the men.

Hernandez stripped down for his customers. All the way nude. Not what I call an idol for kids.

The show was great. I loved the Davids but Michael is still my favorite. I can't wait to see how America voted. I think the girls will rise to the occasion and do a great job tonight
