American Idol: Helping Contestants Become Idols
The musical artists chosen to mentor AI hopefuls usually have an agenda themselves... like a new album or something else to promote. Nonetheless, they do help contestants get closer to the real artist within.
It's impressive to watch the impact seasoned musicians make on the aspiring singers in this competition. Speaking from previous years, the contestants who get the most out of learning from a pro are the ones willing to throw away what's safe (for a week) and take a chance.
This year, there's no female with quite the assets of Dolly Parton or the vocal range of Mariah Carey... but singing with these sensations should liven things up a bit. The same goes for the brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the legendary Neil Diamond's input.
In the upcoming weeks, you'll see all of the stars I just named interact with season seven's best. I anticipate memorable moments.
Mega award winner Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatrical accomplishments include: "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and "Cats." "The Phantom of the Opera" is another claim to fame. Be looking out for the sequel, "Phantom." Webber has already written the lyrics for it. Awards, just to name a few... he won seven Tonys, three Grammys, seven Olivers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and two International Emmys. If all that wasn't enough... In 1992, Webber was knighted by the Queen of England.
Dolly Parton has been keeping herself busy. Right now she's wrapping up the music and lyrics for a Broadway version of "Nine to Five." Parton starred in that movie back in 1980. She won two Grammys and an Oscar nomination for it. Dolly's new album, "Backwards Barbie" hit 17 on the Billboard pop albums chart. She secured the number two position on both the country and indie charts.
Neil Diamond has been making music for four decades. He'll be out with a new album May 6, "Home Before Dark." Diamond's sold more than 125 records worldwide, 15 Top Ten albums and 37 Top 10 singles. He's also been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
