Recap: Dancing with the Stars - Mambo Kings & Quickstep Queens!
It's the night before "dreaded double elimination" on DWTS and the first night that both groups of male and female celebs will be taking to the stage. Who will dance their way to become mambo kings and quickstep queens? We'll find out soon enough.
Steve Guttenberg and Anna Trebunskaya are first to do the mambo. Successfully? Not really. Steve is obviously having fun, but Len thinks he is just "trying too hard," Bruno thinks all of Steve's energy is going to his facial expressions rather than his body, and Carrie Ann think the musicality is just off. Aww, poor Sgt. Mahoney.
Cristian de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke do the quickstep and it's obvious that the judges' comments from last week resonated with the Chilean heartthrob. His posture is much improved. But the judges think he had a few missteps, the dance too "wild to be a classic quickstep" and the footwork is not muy bueno. Phew, the judges are tough tonight.
Monica Seles and Jonathan Roberts were next to take on the mambo, and oy, it's just too painful to watch. Monica is adorable, and she clearly took last week's bad scores to heart, but the dance was too awkward. Bruno tells her she just needs to connect with the music. I don't think there's a DWTS trophy in her future, she looks to be the weakest among the female celebs.
Magician Penn Jillette and partner Kym Johnson did their thing with the quickstep, and although it was quite entertaining (I dig that magic trick with the tie in the beginning), the judges thought the footwork was still bad. Or as Len puts it, "really really really bad." I don't know, Penn doesn't seem to be the type to take criticism well, he keeps talking over the judges, and that just makes me cringe.
It's Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel's turn to do the mambo, and meow, Priscilla is really rocking the leopard print. The judges think the pair's technical work was good, but Bruno thinks Priscilla should do more with her sensuality and take it up a notch. She slithered on the floor, purred like a lioness in heat while decked out in a not-so-subtle leopard print dress Bruno, what more do you want?
It's time for the first dynamic dance of the night... and it's brought to you by Shannon Elizabeth and partner Derek Hough. Although she could be more graceful, Shannon is really working their quickstep with great footwork and great energy. Bruno calls their performance "exciting, a shot of adrenaline" and Carrie Ann praises Shannon's improved posture.

Just after Shannon and Derek's fab quickstep comes another great performance. NFL star Jason Taylor and partner Edyta Sliminska heat up the dance floor with their mambo, and what a mambo it was. Whoa. Bruno named Jason the undisputed "mambo king" of the night, Len calls him a "winner" and Carrie Ann predicts that Jason is a real contender for this season's title. I think he has a real shot at making it to the finals.
Marissa Janet Winokur and Tony Dovalani are next to do the quickstep, but not before we see a teary Marissa in their rehearsal footage. The usually bubbly Tony Award-winner confesses that she doesn't feel she can compete with the death-sprialling Priscilla or leg-kicking Shannon. Tony consoles her and tells her she's got the performance level that no one else has. It was kind of corny, but... aww, I guess. On the dance floor, Marissa displays the enthusiasm she's so known for. The judges still note the poor footwork but praises her for her lovely, bubbly personality and high energy.
The lowest-scoring guy from last week, Adam Carolla takes to the stage for the mambo with his defending champ-partner Julianne Hough. The judges note that while the technique and footwork are not good, Adam was entertaining and fun. He got pretty good scores too (for a total of 21), muuuuuch better than last week's and it might just give Adam a chance. Maybe.
Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez impressed the judges last week, and tonight they had the audience (which included Jennifer "Flashdance" Beals!) and the judges cheering them again. Len and Carrie Ann are impressed with Marlee's musicality, and Bruno likes her presence. The judges give the pair a pretty good score—a 24. We also see Marlee signing V-O-T-E to the camera later.
If this was a contest based on pure performance alone, I would think Kristi Yamaguchi and partner Mark Ballas will have this all in the bag. They got the highest scores last week, and tonight they wowed once again with their mambo. Kristi is really killing the competition. The judges are impressed with her precision and technique, and gave the pair three 9s. Definitely the girl to beat.
Mario and partner Karina Smirnoff perform the final dance of the night and once again, it was impressive. The judges thought Mario's quickstep was precise and focused and displayed great technique. But did anyone else think Bruno's talk of Mario's muscles was a little, um, weird? The pair's dance scored them a 50, putting them in second place (behind Kristi and Mark).
Here are the total scores after two weeks:
Kristi and Mark: 54
Mario and Karina: 50
Jason and Edyta: 49
Marlee and Fabian: 46
Priscilla and Louis: 45
Shannon and Derek: 45
Christian and Cheryl: 41
Marissa and Tony: 39
Adam and Julianne: 36
Steve and Anna: 34
Penn and Kym: 33
Monica and Jonathan: 30

Yes, Bruno's talk of Mario's muscles was more than a little weird.
Shannon surprised me. She really stepped up her game this week.
Adam has no chance.
Didn't care for Cristian and Cheryl's routine, nor Cheryl's dress. Cristian did very well, I thought, and looked marvelous!
I think Priscilla was trying to emulate Ann-Margret in Kitten With a Whip. She can't touch A-M! She had some awkward moves and off-balance turns and has no charisma.
Marlee is amazing, and talk about charisma! Not sure she can go all the way, though. Kristi beats everyone else by miles!
Shannon & Derek should have 29 points just look at the footwork. Jason & Edyta should have 24 points, Jason hardy moved his feet. Edyta did all the work.
