Idol Gives Back: Help Families Survive!

These families really wouldn't have a chance without our help.

If you called in your pledge, chances are you had a difficult time trying to get through.  It felt like trying to phone a vote for your favorite singer... busy, busy, busy.

It was smooth sailing (like David Cook's chances on AI) ... for those who donated online through American Idol's website.  We'll make it even easier for those reading this - click here to donate what you can.

Eight minutes into to the program, Ryan said Idol Gives Back had collected $15 million dollars.  An hour and six minutes in - he said they were close to $18 million.  About an hour and 48 minutes in - the host called out that they've raised nearly $22 million.

Here's the show stopper!

Fergie was all over the place.  This is a picture from when she came out to surprise the audience during Heart's "Barracuda".

The Black Eyed Peas temptress growled, rolled on the floor and flipped cartwheels in that get-up!

Her vocals were phenomenal.  She should put this little number in her act when she's on tour.

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart didn't look exactly like they used to, but they sounded just as hot. View image

Fergie also showed a softer side with John Legend on piano. View image It was beautiful.

She pulls off the versatility that the American Idol judges advise the contestants to do.

Fergie has done her part.  She's a giver.  How many viewers did she motivate?

There is no better motivation to give than to hear from people - kids - who are living in dangerous situations.  When you understand how the extra money lying around the floor or your car can help save a life, it seems like a no brainer.  Do I get Starbucks in the morning this week or do I help families get medicine so they can survive?

Actor Forest Whitaker and his wife, Keisha joined the effort.  They visited an orphanage in Angola.  They met with kids who lost parents to diseases like, HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Simon spent time with a family from New York City who can't afford health care.  The mom, daughter and son all suffer from different serious ailments.  The Children's Health Fund is one of the charities involved with Idol Gives Back.  It helps provide for services for underserved kids and families like them.

Disney teen Miley Cyrus and her dad Billy Ray traveled to his home state of Kentucky.  The two met families from Clay County who desperately need help.  The Cyrus' filmed a short documentary promoting what Save the Children can do for people who live in underdeveloped surroundings.  The US foundation helps families with early childhood development, literacy, and nutrition programs.  Miley also performed two songs on stage to raise money for Idol Gives Back.  View image

Former Idol winner Carrie Underwood had a few laughs with Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher.

The skit started out with Underwood having plumbing problems.  Mike, Hatcher's on-screen husband who happens to be a plumber, was helping her.

When Hatcher walked in on both of them under the sink she yells out... "if you're going to steal my man, I'm going to steal your song."

The next thing you knew... Hatcher was on stage solo -- singing, "Before He Cheats". View image

Wow, Hatcher was believable.  I bet Ryan Seacrest was sitting back watching that thinking... whew, glad I broke it off before it got ugly last year.

So if Hatcher sang Underwood's song -- what did Underwood sing?  George Michael's "Praying for Time".  The AI season four winner emotionally connected with the song as well as her audience.  And she was the best dressed of the night. View image  She was dazzling.

The top 12 AI contestants were answering phones and taking donations.  One caller doubled her pledge to $100 for a kiss blown from Ryan.  I'm not sure how feasible it would be with the high volume of calls, but think about how much callers would up their ante if they could pick which contestant answered their call.

Did I blink and miss it, or did they not air the three presidential candidates remarks?

I didn't see the prez wannabees either. But I was flipping around and thought I'd just missed it. I would really like to know though.

Maybe they thought better of making the show political. That is not what it was all about. We see enough of them every day. I am glad they gave us a break or maybe they are saving them for tonight. UGH

I'd give $100 for Ryan to blow me.
