TV Recap: Desperate Housewives April 13, 2008
Your favorite housewives on Wisteria Lane are finally back and dishing up all their usual drama. Tonight the theme is faith and we all want to know what secret from Katherine Mayfair’s past is going to be exposed. Now that Adam is gone and her life is in pieces, Katherine begins to think back on her past mistakes. She flashes back to her first husband, Wayne Davis, and how he used to hit her again and again, until she finally hit back… and killed him? We’ll have to wait and see.The gals arrive bearing muffins and jam to show their support. Katherine thinks they just want details, but they try to convince her they’re there to help. No luck. She sends them off with their gifts, but not before Bree gets a chance to say she was surprised it was Adam who left Katherine. Afterward, we see Katherine sitting outside, thinking about the “mistakes she’d made and the one she’d buried,” while looking down at a cross made out of stones on the ground below her. Something tells me the old husband is long gone now.
Putting on Their Sunday Best
Except for Lynette, the ladies all head off to church on Sundays with their holy accessories. This time, Lynette thinks maybe she should join in. She floats the idea to Tom, who doesn’t think he should have to be punished again, since he already did his time growing up. When one of the boys says that Jesus is the guy who helps out Santa, Tom changes his mind.
Since Bree is the most religious person she knows, Lynette asks her and Orson if they’ll take her family to their church and they agree. Lynette’s very excited about being a Presbyterian.
Elsewhere, Gaby is late for mass, but really she just wants to ask the priest to marry her and Carlos (again) in two weeks. He is rather confused, considering she was just married and her husband just died, but after she explains that technically if it was an affair it was with Victor and since “God smoked him,” it must be alright. She also promises to change religions if she doesn’t stay married for the rest of her life this time. I’d say it’s a good possibility.
Back in church, Lynette raises her hand during the sermon, and Bree is mortified. She wants to know why all the bad things have been happening to people lately and how that can be man’s fault. She also uses the word “dumbass” further adding to the humiliation. The reverend tells her to go to Tuesday night bible study, and she seems sold on the idea.
Barely Legal
Susan’s cousin Tim is around doing taxes and he’s recovering from losing his real job due to his escapades with an 18-year-old cheerleader named Chloe. I’m sure he can find a few other prospects while he’s in town.
Dylan comes over for study date with Julie. Katherine is with and has a plant to give Susan as an apology. Susan introduces her to Tim, who calls her Mrs. Davis. Susan remembers that Tim (aka Cousin Timmy) met her years ago when he stayed there for camp one summer. Dylan mentions that she turns 18 next week and Susan is about to panic.
The (former) Odd Couple
Carlos smells Edie coming to his hospital room. She claims she feels bad about losing his money and gives him a diamond bracelet he gave her… surely it must be worth something. It’s Cartier, right? Guess again. The box is, but the bracelet is from a swap meet. She leaves and tries to bribe the nurse for info about his condition.
Gaby brings the priest to Carlos’s room and is ready to get married right there in the hospital. He reluctantly agrees, but needs to tell her something in private. He says he might not get his sight back… she gasps. Maybe for three or four months he says—lying, I think—and the ceremony continues.
Lynette is excited about the new bible she bought and plans on breaking it in that night. Bree tells her that church is for answers not questions, and in a roundabout, fake way, also tells her that she was humiliated and perhaps Lynette should explore other options. Perhaps the gospel church or the Unitarians.
Dylan leaves a message for Adam about the partially burned note she found from Aunt Lilly. Adam listens to the message with Katherine and she tells him to keep the truth hidden so she doesn’t go to jail. She also says she misses Adam, but he doesn’t seem too enthused about that news.
Blind Anger
Edie comes over to congratulate Gaby on winning. She springs the news on Gaby that Carlos probably has permanent blindness. This is news to her. Carlos comes home to Gaby cooking stew from a can, with a side of dishwater. She directs him around, making him run into the dishwasher, chair, wall, etc., until she makes him confess about the blindness. She then pummels him with fruits and says she’s sticking around, for better or for worse.
Bree brings the Reverend some blueberry scones (aka bribery scones.) He wants to know where Lynette is and tells Bree that church should be for questions, not answers. Bree takes off toward the Catholic Church to find Lynette. They get in an argument over faith and Lynette confesses she needs to figure out why she has managed to survive cancer and the tornado when so many haven’t. Later on, Bree goes over to see Lynette. She says she is out of the running for the ladies auxiliary, and she’s sorry she lost sight of her own faith and didn’t help her friend.
Susan bursts in on Tim in the throes of passion with… Katherine? Didn’t expect that. Later, Susan asks him about what happened. He said old feelings started to come up. Turns out, they go wayyyy back, as in summer camp. He tells her it was a one-time deal. Apparently he tried to go back with flowers on the last night and heard a lot of yelling. He saw Katherine crack a man in the skull with a candlestick. The look in her eyes was terrifying, so he took off. He didn’t know the man, but thinks it might have been the ex-husband.
Dylan tells Adam that she’s had a bad feeling for a long time, and people keep telling her she’s crazy. Adam told her that Aunt Lilly was crazy. She asks him for the truth and he says her mother didn’t do it. What’s making him go to bat and lie for Katherine?
According to Mary Alice, “Faith is a belief in something that cannot be proven… we all want to believe in those we are closest to. But where there is doubt our faith beings to vanish and fear rushes in to take its place.” With that, Susan meets Katherine’s mysterious gaze while they take out their trash.
Final thoughts: Will Susan dig deeper and uncover Katherine’s dirty secret? Will Dylan ever learn the truth about her father? Will Lynette find faith after all?
Next week: Orson is naked in Susan’s kitchen! Someone named Rick turns up from Lynette’s past, and a fundraiser sparks some competition between Bree and Katherine. Be sure to tune in!
