TV Recap: Gossip Girl
Hey gang, Gossip Girl is back! Have you seen the new ads? OMFG. Well, okay, things weren’t that hot tonight, but no doubt they will be soon. Things started off with Blair in a Breakfast at Tiffany’s re-creation; only instead of Audrey Hepburn chasing after her cat it’s Blair… or Jenny? Nate steps out from behind a corner and calls her Jenny. This must be a nightmare. B wakes up and has to face the wreckage of her life since she was dethroned as Queen Bee before spring break.
Jenny is trying desperately to fit in with her new crowd (a.k.a. Blair’s old crowd), and it’s obvious she’s out of her league. She went to Aspen with Hazel, she owes $120 for brunch already, and the label-speak is just lost on her. How will she ever keep up?
Serena tries to get into the bathroom, only to find Chuck flaming in there. I don’t know what it is about Chuck, but despite his bad rep, I secretly think he’s really alluring. Feel free to call me out on this, ladies. Bart, Lily, Chuck, Eric, and Serena are attempting to have breakfast, and Bart announces that Chuck will be his best man.
En route to school, Blair looks like a bag lady with her scarf and glasses. Does she really think that’s a disguise? Serena tells her it’s been three weeks since the scandal and everyone will have forgotten. Wrong. No one looks happy to see her, and in fact Jenny lets a spoonful of yogurt fly (it lands on B's head) as she and the girls finish up breakfast in front of school.
Nate stops Jenny and tells her that he told Blair that it was her who told him about Chuck. He warns her about her new circle of friends, and tells her to look at what’s happened to Blair. Jenny doesn’t care though; she’s too caught up in it now to make any sense of things. More importantly, why does Nate care about her so much?
As a way of avoiding her special initiation dinner, Jenny invites Blair to meet the girls for a reservation at Butter later. Serena convinces her to be nice and accept. Hmm, what’s that all about? Just plain meanness. The girls stood her up, and instead made fun of her at Hazel's. Jenny is talking on her phone when she stumbles up on an amazing closet, and gets an idea of how she’ll find a special dress to impress her “friends” for her special dinner. Stealing, perhaps? Blair makes a phone call to Brooklyn and announces that she is back.
Serena gets a couple of weird deliveries. A box of porn arrives in the middle of the tasting with the wedding caterer, and then three cases of champagne get delivered in front of the school. Chuck is around both times, and she instantly blames him… but he doesn’t look guilty. Something tells me Chuck would be enjoying this more if he’d actually done it.
Jenny must have ripped off some of Hazel's dresses. She already pawned her sewing machine, and now wants to trade in a red dress for the display dress that’s $1,200. She makes the trade, brings her new dress to show the girls, and then learns that Hazel’s mom’s one-of-a-kind Valentino was stolen last night. Oops! The maid will likely lose her job if Jenny doesn’t come clean.
Serena has a date with Dan, but first Lily wants to talk about the incidents and how she thinks they’re related to Serena’s feelings about the upcoming wedding. She blames Chuck and Bart overhears, asking what he’s done now. He already had a talk with him earlier about good behavior.
Jenny can’t get the dress back. She calls Nate for help (i.e. $8,000), but tells him to forget it. She goes in the dressing room and puts the dress on under her coat and leaves. When she gets home, Blair has arranged a surprise birthday party with Rufus. Jenny is shocked and immediately has to go change. The girls think the party is lame (the cake with her face on it sure is), but Blair is in her glory. Jenny can’t get out of the dress and she starts panicking. You know someone is going to walk in. The door is open. Stop! In come the girls. Busted. Everyone takes off, and Blair announces she has a table at Butter for the fallout.
Jenny and Rufus talk. Even he got played by Blair. Big surprise. Serena gets another envelope and opens it in front of Eric. It’s cocaine. He says Chuck sent it. Enraged, she takes off to find him, wearing a hilarious dolphin sweater, and she finds out that Bart has kicked him out because of her finger pointing.
Blair is waiting for the girls, who finally show. Looks like she’s making progress. But wait, Jenny, who snuck out to go visit Nate, brings him to Butter, thereby absolving her dress mishap, and relegating Blair to the background once again. The girls love Nate (who doesn’t), and it seems she’s on the level again.
Serena gets another letter at home and takes off. She goes to Chuck's—again the dolphin sweater, really? She’s there to apologize. It wasn’t him, which we knew. It was Gossip Girl, of course. Time for the two of them to have a drink.
Next week: Georgina Sparks, played by Michelle Trachtenberg, turns up from Serena’s past, and it looks like she will be causing plenty of trouble all around. So what did you think? Were you mortified for Jenny, or do you wish she would just quit trying so hard? Do you like the idea of her and Nate? Will Blair reclaim her crown? Why is Serena getting all the gifts, and what will Georgina reveal about her past? So many questions! Until next time…
