TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy April 24, 2008
Opening of the episode and everyone is napping except Meredith…of course. She’s in therapy. Apparently we are eavesdropping on her third session. Clearly, her therapist wants to know what’s going on in Meredith’s life…thoughts…feelings…ya know, things therapists use to analyze you. And Meredith, of course, is closed off saying that even attending therapy without saying a word is beneficial. Her therapist is less than amused. Meredith’s needed therapy for years…so this is just what the doctor ordered…literally.
In another part of town, George isn’t sleeping either. He’s violently killing roaches in his and Lexie’s new apartment. Lexie wants him to accept it as their home, but George seems to be having a rough time. Lexie says they just need to fix it up. I don’t know if homeless people would live in this dump. For doctors, it is some pretty sad digs.
Meredith tells her therapist that she can’t sleep. It’s been five weeks. Five weeks since what, the therapist inquires. The therapist says they work in a gossipy hospital so she hears things. Meredith says Derek’s not the reason she’s in therapy. The therapist inquires why is she then. Meredith gets a page. She jets off saying something about a contest. Contest?
Christina wakes up to her page. Then Izzie. Then Alex. They all are tracing forward towards their page. In fact, they are all power walking except Alex. Where’s Alex? Christina knocks Izzie over with a little trip/hip action.
Meanwhile, Bailey has her kid with her in the hospital. The cCief tells Bailey about a contest with the residents. Bailey plays dumb. Apparently, they have all slept in the hospital the last 14 days. Engaged in a surgical contest. A point system. Bailey continues to pretend she doesn’t know what the Chief’s talking about even after the residents all race by. Bailey says her residents can fight for surgeries all they want. She’s not a zookeeper. She has a lot of responsibilities and she can’t bother herself with overachieving residents.
They all stop short when Meredith sees Derek walking into the hospital with Rose. Christina and Izzie try to make Meredith feel better by talking smack about Rose. George walks up and sees that Izzie has cut her hair…he interrupts them to ask her what she did to it. She seems a bit flustered by his query. But Meredith starts talking again about the girls just trying to make her feel better…and really, she’s just interested in winning the contest. With that she runs ahead of them. Let the race continue.
George follows the girls as they continue power walking towards the ambulance drop off. He’s upset that Izzie cut off her hair because of the contest. Izzie says the contest has made her feel juiced up and alive. Living at the hospital has been amazing. But today is the last day of the contest and apparently there is some huge prize at stake. Everyone wants it. But what is it? Hopefully a week off. Or a vacation to the Bahamas.
Derek and Rose are still walking into together laughing. After they part ways, McSteamy asks what Derek sees in Rose. He starts talking about Derek and Rose’s sex life. He speculates all kinds of hot steamy sex. Derek says she won’t sleep with him until they are serious. The only thing better than actual sex is anticipation. TouchÈ McDreamy!
Alex catches up to grab his scrub gears. He wants to know why no one woke him. It’s a dog-eat-dog contest the girls respond. They are all getting ready when Christina sees Callie and Dr. Hahn walking in together. Apparently they had a wild night and are just now finishing it up. Christina wants to use her friendship with Callie to get in with Dr. Hahn…who Callie keeps calling Erica. It’s so obvious.
All of the residents discuss Callie and Hahn’s friendship. They talk about how the girls just go out looking for sex…and the contest is better than sex. Christina sees it as the missed opportunities. Callie is living in Christina’s apartment and hanging out with Hahn. And Christina could be networking with her future mentor.
Outside at the ambulance bank, a guy comes with a swollen ankle. Izzie trails the leader, Christina, by 26 points. So today is do or die. She grabs the patient and goes with it. Meanwhile, Meredith, Alex and Christina all sit outside waiting for the next trauma. Bailey catches them…asking they are trolling for patients. She is about to make all of them go inside when a car pulls up. Three people camping in the mountains and they were attacked by a bear.
All of the people are in some way or shape injured. The majorly injured guy starts stepping out of the car and he says something. No one understands what he says. Now Christina grabs him and catches his intestines in her hands.
Trauma Drama
As Hahn and Bailey work on intestines guy, Scott, he is explaining what happened. His brother reached his hand out to touch a cub bear. The cub attached to his brother’s hand and he freaked out. So this guy came over to help. The mother bear saw this happen and attacked him. They go camping all the time so he doesn’t understand what happened. He has no idea why his brother, Philip, would go touch a cub bear. He knows better.
The guy who pet the cub, Philip, only has a hole through his hand and minor injuries. Meredith, Callie and George work on him while his wife, Jennifer, watches on. He continues explaining his side of the story. But he’s freaking out saying it’s his fault and he must be informed about his brother.
Cheech Marin. He’s on the episode. This is crazy. Instead of his character name, I will now refer to him as "Cheech" because I can. =)
Izzie’s patient, Cheech, can’t explain what happened to him. One minute he’s walking…next the paramedics are standing over him. Obviously, Izzie is trying to make something out of nothing. She really wants her points. She is getting really detailed with his questions. He starts to freak out…understandably since he doesn’t understand how he broke his ankle. But Izzie is really asking some crazy questions. Poor guy. I would FLIP out if I were him. She’s making it sound like he has way deeper issues.
The Chief, Christina, Bailey and Alex in the OR are working on Scott, intestines guy. Hahn comes in to ask for someone to keep her in the loop with the situation. She has a surgery scheduled. Christina jumps at the chance to give hourly updates.
Lexie is going through the supply closet. George walks in saying that he hates this contest. Izzie comes in to the supply closet trying to get stuff for her broken ankle patient. She thinks this is a medical mystery. George is skeptical over the whole thing. He thinks Izzie should just treat her patient and call it a day.
After Izzie leaves, Lexie reveals to George that she is trying to steal from the supply closet for their new home. She even is going as far as making a bed pan a fruit bowl. Bed sheets for urine can be used as a tablecloth. Lexie is going outside the box.
Meredith says Philip, the guy who touched the cub bear, is all fixed up. They just need to go talk to the front desk. She’ll take his wife there. Apparently, they are newlyweds. She is his rebound girl. Just what Meredith needs to hear… They got married after only ten days. He says when you know, you know. He seems perfectly affectionate and in love.
Meredith and Jennifer, the wife, leave the room. She starts crying. The woman can’t believe that he married her. She is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Apparently, he’s rich and fantastic. She can’t believe he chose her. But you know what…every girl has been there. Felt unworthy…then the eleventh day happens and whoo…you realize he’s still a guy. Ha.
Meredith tries to comfort her, but notices her head his bleeding. The woman says it’s just a scratch from a branch but when she removes her cap, there is a piece of her flesh falling off her head. Brain revealed and all. GROSS!!!!
Bigger than Big
Derek is looking at Jennifer’s brain/head. The bear got it. And she didn’t even notice it. McSteamy is looking at it for plastic surgery regards. No brain damage. Derek treats Meredith kinda shadily – just hands her a flashlight. All she needs are stitches. Then McSteamy says don’t worry he and Rose won’t last. Hmmm…we know whom McSteamy’s rooting for.
The Chief works on Scott. Christina and Alex fight for the suturing honors. Bailey decides they will share it. The Chief seems to enjoy their enthusiasm. Though he spoke of it with disdain earlier he sees how much more enthusiastic they are. Bailey reveals that it’s a point per suture. So she can’t kiss up to the Chief.
Lexie is now stealing hospital art. And really. That’s it for her bit…right now.
Callie says that Cheech has just a fracture. Izzie is making him freak out even more by trying to get extra tests done. He flips out by saying that he wants to go back to being 30. The days of when he was young and married. He doesn’t want some pretty doctor holding his hand while he’s old fat and useless.
Callie and Christina talk about Callie’s friendship with Hahn. She wants in. Callie laughs it off because Hahn can’t be a mentor to someone she doesn’t like.
Meredith and George discuss the two patients. The woman is getting tons of sutures and Meredith gives the patient to George…even though it’s a point a suture. She gives up her points so she can further dissect the man who marries his rebound. And see if he has a brain tumor or something. Hmm…making the case personal. George says it’s about Derek as he walks away. She runs after George to say she isn’t obsessed with Derek and whom does she run into? Her therapist.
Office Romances
Lexie is still running around the office stealing items to make their home…homier. She’s about to go for a small potted plant. But Rose and Derek walk by…and run into each other. She has flowers in her hands…and Derek and her flirt about her giving him hints. Rose goes over to talk to Lexie about trying to play it cool. Rose says she loves him. She can’t believe she shared it with Lexie who she doesn’t know. Meredith overheard everything. Lexie goes over and picks up the flowers for herself. Meredith asks what Lexie’s doing…she cops to stealing crap. Then Lexie asks how Meredith is doing..and Meredith closes up.
Christina and Alex are doing the sutures. The Chief heckles Alex by saying he has only done 17 and Christina has done 23. Bailey is less than amused. The Chief is now entertained by the games. It’s producing productivity. Can’t be all-bad. Who doesn’t love humorous bosses?
Christina runs over to give Hahn a report to suck up. Hahn remains cold to Christina. But I think this is a tough love thing. I don’t think she could possibly hate Christina that much over the Burke/Christina faking it scenario.
McSteamy tries to make a sex contest for him and Derek. He wants Derek to be a free agent. To keep things interesting and McSteamy amused. Derek, of course, is a one gal kind of guy. So he’s not interested. What slightly single guy isn’t interested in a sex off? He must really like Rose.
Cheech is in pain and Izzie pumps him up by telling him that she is doing this for him. She is making his life better. I really don’t know how much I like this story line. Okay, okay, Izzie is trying to be a competitor. But she’s annoying.
Meredith wheels Philip into Scott’s room. Scott starts yelling at his brother for touching the cub. Scott thinks Philip is having an early a midlife crisis. Meredith starts psychologically testing the patient. Seeing why he is doing the spontaneous acts. She thinks its something more than what he’s been thinking.
George works on the woman’s sutures. Bailey goes over to Izzie to find out if she is only helping Cheech for points. Izzie launches into a long speech. Bailey agrees. Though her and George kinda laugh about Izzie’s craziness.
Meredith keeps discussing things with Philip. Asking about all his recent changes. Big lifestyle, unusual changes. She does a peripheral vision test and he apparently doesn’t’ have it. She screams yes, which makes her seem like a nutjob.
Fight for Life
Meredith thinks Philip has a brain tumor. She says he has made a spontaneous decision. He goes near bears when he knows he shouldn’t. He does things out of character. Perhaps even his marriage is a sign of the tumor. Philip doesn’t agree to the MRI, but Jennifer says that he didn’t make the marriage decision rashly. They are really in love. They should do the MRI. He loves her.
Christina gives Hahn the update. Hahn wants to know why Christina is running around. Hahn then tempts Christina with staying on watching Dr. Hahn put a heart valve in. So obvious. Hahn wants Christina to lose. Tempt her with things other than winning. We’ll see how this goes.
George and Izzie go over Cheech’s charts. George is teasing that she and Meredith are chasing cases. Izzie starts getting defensive. But now she is curious if Meredith has a medical mystery.
In the X-Ray room, Philip has a brain tumor. Meredith brings George in to gloat. AND, she needs a favor from him. Hmmm…guess who will become her errand boy.
The Chief and Alex talk about Alex being an underdog. He’s a fighter. The Chief says he roots for the underdog. Alex doesn’t see it that way. He compares himself to the guy who was attacked by the bear. He didn’t provoke it. But he has to work hard to stay alive. Some people have to work harder due to the cards they were dealt. Scott starts crashing.
George brings Derek’s the charts. He wants to know why Meredith didn’t do it. George just plays dumb to protect his friend. But Derek, how could it not be obvious. You just treated Meredith like trash…she’s not going to run charts to you.
Alex fights to save Scott’s life. He is giving him CPR as the sutures come undone and blood goes everywhere. Things are not looking pretty. SO SAD!!!
In Philip’s room, the Chief announces that Scott died. Philip starts laughing when he finds out. Weird reaction. Not so weird when Meredith tells him that he has the tumor. They can’t operate. It’s too large and has been growing too long. Philip starts crying and then says, "Good." He killed his brother so he doesn’t deserve to survive.
So Over
Jennifer, the wife, chases after Meredith. She asks if she, the marriage, is just a symptom of the tumor. Meredith says only she can know that. So sad. You think you are in love and the guy really has a brain tumor causing him to act out of character. I think my heart would be broken as well.
Izzie tells Cheech that he has the flu. He gets really upset. He doesn’t understand why she put him through all of this. He yells at her. Like flipping out on a scale of 1 to 10… I’d rate this an 11. I don’t blame the man. I would freak out as well. A day of pure misery to find out you have the flu…and you can’t even walk out with a prescription.
Christina, Izzie and Alex discuss the points while Meredith stands behind them. Meredith seems less than thrilled. Bailey delivers the news. Grey won. She gets a pager. A power pager. It’s sparkly. And it has the power to receive pages from all the residents and if she wants their surgery…she takes it.
In the elevator, McSteamy doesn’t like Derek and Rose together. He openly admits it. He thinks that it’s time for male bonding. McSteamy asks if Derek is serious about Rose. And he says he thinks so. McSteamy then says he’ll support him.
Izzie does paperwork. And the Chief walks over to ask her about it. She ordered $121,000 worth of tests. She should be in trouble, but she feels bad about what she did. The Chief builds her up by saying "The scars you bear are the sign of a competitor."
Christina goes home to see Callie and Hahn hanging out in the apartment. Christina starts kissing serious Hahn butt. Obviously out of her element, she leaves them to hang out, but she spies on them a little. She seems a bit jealous and lonely.
George goes home to find his place completely decorated and cute. With all of the stuff Lexie stole. Lexie gives him a speech about wanting to live together. She says she wants to be his friend. She doesn’t have any except him. And now this is her only home. George seems sideswiped. He says he complains a lot. He says he’s going to stop complaining. He’ll focus on what’s good. Like the apartment. It’s good.
Meredith gets a page on her shiny pager while she is working a computer. She ignores it.
Derek and Rose walk in together and kiss. Meredith sees them. Derek walks over to her and says hello. She researched an idea to save people like Philip. But she wants to start a test to save lives. She needs Derek to be her neurosurgeon.
In therapy, Meredith sits there silent. Finally, she leans forward and says she better start talking now.
Final Thoughts
Great episode. Could have been better…but it had plenty of action. And the contest angle was fun. But I don’t like Rose and Derek together. I think Alex deserves more character revealing. Less glimpses…more arcs. However, I liked the patients in tonight’s episode. I don’t know how George and Izzie are so okay. I think there should be some awkwardness. Not discussions about her haircut and crazy obsession with winning.
Meredith in therapy adds a fun element and I can’t wait to see where that goes. Anything that shocked you gals/guys this episode? Any ideas of who will hook up with whom next?
