TV Recap: Ugly Betty April 24, 2008

The season returns with Betty’s big birthday bonanza! Betty dreams of a perfect day full of green fields, blossoms, Henry with a horse-drawn carriage and fireworks. All packed and ready to go for her perfect birthday weekend with Henry, we are greeted by Charlie (surprise!) at his door. She apparently came back for a special parenting seminar—clearly just an excuse to ruin Betty and Henry’s weekend together. Being the understanding and kind girlfriend she is, Betty brushes it off and tells Henry they can spend a romantic evening together in the city instead.

Meanwhile, Wil continues to portray her sister, Renee (guest star Gabrielle Union) as somebody Daniel should be careful of. Though her words do not have much credibility whatsoever, Daniel takes the bait and asks Renee about “Stony Brook”. Daniel asks, and Renee tells him Stony Brook was a college she went to on Long Island, then storms off because Daniel actually believed Wil.

Under the advice of Amanda, Betty plans a romantic dinner on the patio with Henry at hot spot, Pemberly Inn followed by a night of fireworks at Central Park. Gio stops by for a quick chat with Betty, looking good with his new shaved head. The convo gets a little awkward, as Betty continues to insist that they haven’t been talking because she’s been busy with “work and just living”. Gio mentions a horse-drawn carriage and Betty freaks out a bit, wondering how he knew that was what she wanted. So much chemistry and awkward tension in the air! Hmm… has she just been avoiding him to stop herself from developing feelings for him?

Hilda drops by Henry’s apartment with the birthday cupcakes Papa Suarez baked, so they can munch under the stars at Central Park. Hilda reveals to Charlie that the party will go on, even though they are not leaving the city. She flashes Charlie her 2 inch acrylic nails and warns her, “These are not just decorative”.

25.jpgBack at Mode, Daniel and Alexis realize that Claire is taking her magazine Hot Flash seriously. They are determined that the magazine will not sell, and Alexis basically tells mom that she needs to cut her off. Disappointed at first, Claire uses her own funding instead for staff- she utilizes a program funded by the state for ex-prisoners. In other words, her team of staff are all ex-prisoners!

Renee has plans of her own after Wil tried to break her and Daniel up. She feeds Mark chocolate martinis until he spills all the dirty secrets about the identity of the baby Christina is carrying. She just so happens to record everything onto her Blackberry, and reaches a compromise with Wil- if she leaves her and Daniel alone, then this secret will remain safe. Daniel and Renee patch things up, and she tells the truth (at least she claims) about the Stony Brook incident. She went a little psycho over a guy, had to see a shrink, and now takes prescribed pills for it. Little does she know, Mark was sent into Daniel’s house earlier not to steal the Blackberry- but to replace her pills with another kind that will slowly drive her insane. Although Wil may seem like the evil sister to Mark, she reveals, “At least I stopped short of murder…”  Daniel has no idea what he’s getting himself into when he asks Renee to move in with him!

33.jpgThe conniving Charlie fakes a sickness in an effort to ruin Henry and Betty’s night. He leaves a voice message for Betty, but all that bling that Hilda and Justin decorated her phone with seems to have disrupted the reception. Betty has no idea Henry is not showing up, and sits at the Inn till dark waiting for him. Papa receives the call from Henry and decides to decorate the house for a surprise party instead. Gio shows up at Mode with cake for Betty, and hears from Amanda that Henry blew her off. After hours of poking at her cheese fondue, Betty is kicked out of the Inn as she is holding up the table. At the side of the road, Gio shows up with a horse-drawn carriage! He thought he could at least try to brighten up her day, and make it for the end of the fireworks at the park. But the wheel on the carriage breaks, Betty gets her dress all muddy, and nothing goes their way. Sparks fly from a construction site behind them, a sort of fireworks after all. Everyone is asleep when Betty returns home, and the day is saved by Papa Suarez’s cupcakes. He hands her a gift Daniel dropped off for her in advance knowing that he would forget. Though she curls up into Henry’s arms to sleep, it’s obvious she’s thinking about somebody else…
