Lost...and not just the characters...

*Two Hour episode...extra long recap.  So let's go...

Guys this is it.  The last episode until January 2009.  Yes, I said 2009.  So much has happened and in the next hour so much will happen.

3, 2, 1…kaboom

Lost-5.28-1.jpg

Jack at the end of last season’s cliffhanger.  He calls to Kate that they must go back to the island.  Kate drives off…but now she backs up the car.  She gets angry about his suggestion of going back.  How could he possibly  think she would head back to the island with Aaron under her care.  Apparently the obituary and funeral is for Jeremy Bentham.  Who the F is Jeremy Bentham?  Jack drunkedly talks about keeping Kate and Aaron safe, but she is pretty much done with Jack.  Aaron misses him, and she is having a hard time explaining Jack’s absence. She’s not taking him back to the island.  And she walks back to her car…. and Jack stands alone…confused.  Poor guy.

On the island, a bleeding Jack goes through the jungle with Sawyer.  Anxious to hear Jack’s plan, Sawyer is surprised to hear there isn’t one.  A noise stirs them, but its only Hurley urinated in the trees.  I love the random acts of comedy 0n the show.  Hurley and Jack have their first meeting since the split.  Kinda awkward.  Sawyer wants to know where “he” is.  He/?  Locke?  Ben?  Who knows…who cares.  We’re all up to speed.

Locke searches the outside of the green house looking for the entrance.  Jack calls out to him.  Awkward.  I keep forgetting that all these people haven’t seen each other in “forever” (aka days).  These meetings post argument is interesting.

On the boat Desmond looks at the explosives situation.  He’s familiar with bombs from his army days, and he figures that these are to be triggered remotely from a radio receiver.  Jin wants to know if the bomb can be turned off.  Desmond is quite the explosives expert.  Kinda impressive….kinda sexy.  Not sure why…  But I love a man with an accent and knowledge of disarming weapons.  Ya know, make love not war.

Double Agents

At the greenhouse, Locke tries tot explain the situation to Jack.  And Jack says whatever…he doesn’t care about Locke’s crazy antics.  He’s here to get Hurley and get off the island.  But Hurley is always the mediator.  He piques Jack’s interest by telling him the 411 on Ben and the Commandos.  Now Jack can’t just back away.  Sawyer has been surprising silent.  Not exactly like our tough guy to take a backseat in conflicts.

Walking through the jungle, the main Commando guy wants to know what makes Ben so special.  Why must he return Ben, alive, to Charles Widmore?  Ben can never answer a question…he must follow up a question with another question.  This time he wants to know if Widmore wanted Ben’s daughter dead.

Before the main Commando can even come up with a smart alec response, Kate runs out of the brush.   The main Commando asks why she’s running.  She explains Ben’s people are chasing her.  The commandos go into the jungle to keep their captive…well captive.  Then whispering.  And one of the commandos is attacked…and his neck is snapped gross.  Those Others don’t mess around.  Another commando gets killed.  The commandos continue wasting their bullets and biting the dust…one after another.  As the commandos try to protect themselves…Kate gets Ben to run.  A grenade is thrown at the main Commando’s feet.  He saves himself by throwing the grenade at one of his compadres.  Only one commando left…big bad guy, of course.  Ben falls and he’s right on his tail.  Kate goes back to grab Ben.  The commando keeps running but gets attacked by Sayid.  As he tries to shoot Sayid, Sayid kicks some serious booty.  The gun is knocked to the ground.  A struggle for it…and then hand-to-hand combat.  Just when it seems Sayid has been taken, Richard shoots the Commando in the back. So this was all a ploy to save Ben.  Kate comes to help Sayid up.  They smile at each other.  Apparently saving Ben has gotten them closer to what they want…

Ben thanks Richard for coming.  Strangely and almost friendly, Ben wants Kate to cut the rope binding his wrists.  She looks at him oddly, but does as he asks.  Not being a dummie, Ben wants to know the arrangement.  Richard shares that if Kate and Sayid helped save Ben they are promised passage off the island.  Hmmm…good for them.  They are told to go find the helicopter and get themselves to safety.

More than a Feeling

Future time…Hurley is at the mental hospital.  An older woman walks over to ask if he’s dangerous.  She says that Hurley knows his grandson.  It’s Walt.  He and his grandmother traveled across the country to see him.   OMG he got so big. Walt is like a teenager now…kids grow fast.   Upon the Oceanic 6’s arrival, he expected a visit from at least one of them.  But the only person who came was Jeremy Bentham.  Again, who is this man?  A code name for Ben?  Now Walt wants to know why they are all lying about what happened on the island.  Hurley explains they are lying because it’s the only way to protect everyone who didn’t come back.  And Walt says like “my dad?” Hurley agrees, but Walt seems a little skeptical about the whole situation.

On the island, Sawyer watches through binoculars as Locke and Jack talk.  Sawyer wants to know what’s going on.  Hurley says “leader stuff.”  Ha. So funny Hurley.  Then Hurley asks about Claire and Aaron…Sawyer just looks at him.  So sad…there really isn’t a great explanation there…. we lost her…to someone in the jungle.  AWKWARD.

Locke says he wants Jack to reconsider leaving the island.  Jack and Locke have their confrontation.  Jack is mad about half the people getting killed under Locke’s command.  Locke shares he has forgiven Jack for Jack shooting at him…. with an unloaded gun…but Jack was prepared to shoot.  Jack is on the island for a reason, and when he leaves the knowledge will eat him alive.

Then Locke asks for Jack to lie.  Actually he commands it, “You’re going to have to lie.”  It’s the only way to protect the island, and he goes as far as to describe the island as a place of miracles.  Locke says if Jack can’t believe that then Jack should just wait to see what he’s about to do.  Yeah, dummie…I think Locke is a weirdo, but he’s about to move the island.  Not sure how yet…will it be like a tugboat situation hear?  Or a simple vanishing?

Anyway, Jack doesn’t believe in miracles.  Ben stumbles up…and asks if he’s interrupting.  Being completely out of the loop, Jack doesn’t realize Ben’s involvement in the whole situation.  He points a gun at Ben, but Ben just goes over to Locke.  He figured Locke wouldn’t be able to find the entrance.  Then he wants to know if Locke filled Jack in on all the details.  But Locke explains all he could do is try.   Ben says Jack and company need to get off the island.  And Locke tells Jack to lie as he goes underground in the green house…with Ben…so weird.  I love this show, but the twists and turns are so crazy.  It’s great.  I never know what to expect.

People are Strange

On the freighter, Michael gets approached by Sun as he’s moving something.  She wants to know what’s going on down there. Michael says they are going to be okay if the tank in his hands does what it’s supposed to.  He’s going to send Jin upstairs.  Sun says she’s pregnant.  And Michael seems genuinely happy for her.  It’s either a way for Sun to get Jin away from the explosives or she still wants to share with Michael.  Like she trusts him to remember her condition when he’s trying to stop the explosion.

The tank Michael has is liquid nitrogen.  They can freeze the battery for a short period of time with what they have in the tank.  But only that will buy them some time.  But once the battery unfreezes…BOOM.

Faraday gets back to the beach with the raft.  He’s acting a little funny.  He tells Juliet to get the next group onto the raft.  Hmm…somethings up…not sure what…but Faraday knows something.

Miles makes himself at home…per usual.  He’s eating peanuts from a Dharma Initiative jar.  Rose asks him if he asked permission to eat those nuts.  She basically comes out to say she doesn’t trust him.  Dan asks for Miles to follow him.  Faraday says Charlotte and Miles need to be on the raft with him.  Miles wants to stay…so he’s not going on the raft.  And he’s surprised Charlotte wants to leave. After all the time Charlotte has spent trying to get back here.  Charlotte acts clueless…but Miles seems to know something about her that we don’t.  These freighters remain mysterious.  Just like the Others.

Locke and Ben travel down to the bottom of the Orchid station.  Ben gets all the technology started.  Locke asks if a TV is the magic box.  And Ben gets frustrated saying its not. Locke wants to know what the stuff is for.  He says its silly Dharma experiments.  Ben hands over a video for Locke to watch…and Ben says he’ll then take care of some business.  Ben’s crazier than usual…if that’s possible.

The video talks about the Orchid station is not a normal station.  The doctor in the video explains says there is a vault or negatively charged chamber.  Ben meanwhile puts chairs and all kinds of metallic crap into it.  The same vault as the video…just as the doctor says no metallic objects should be placed into the vault.  The Orchid is a time travel vault.  They place a rabbit into it to prove their point.  But the video moves ahead…speeding ahead.  Very fastforward like without a fastforward button.

Suddenly, the elevator moves…and goes up.  Ben asks for his weapon back.  WHO THE F IS COMING DOWN THE ELEVATOR?  Twenty bucks it’s the main Commando…my co-viewers very observantly screamed he couldn’t be dead after Richard shot him.  He was wearing a bulletproof vest.  Touche…touché.

Suddenly I See

Lost-5.28-3.jpg

Hurley, Sawyer and Jack go through the woods.  Hurley runs to Sayid.  Kate and Sawyer flirt but she immediately checks on Jack.  Sawyer goes over to Frank and cuts Frank’s cuffs for him.  Jacks wants to know what Sayid did with the boat.  Sayid just says its safe now.  Sawyer, Sayid, Jack, Kate Hurley and Frank get into the helicopter.  Frank gets the helicopter into the air and all of them seem so happy.  They all seem so happy to leave the island.  And Kate enjoys the breeze in her hair.  Its actually the first time I think I’ve ever seen her so free.

At the greenhouse station, the elevator comes back down with the Commando guy.  Whoever bet against me can make all checks payable to “Cash.”  Thank you very much.

He wasn’t killed… jacket must have protected him.  Commando calls out for Ben.  He talks about how he had body armor.  Naturally, he must bring the less observant up to speed.  That’s not a sweet jacket but a shoot of bulletproof materials.  He takes off the awesome body armor jacket to show that he has some armband on…it’s a heart rate monitor…. its connected to a transmitter…and if his heart stops beating then the freighter blows up.  Ben and Jack are both hiding in the shadows.  Ben watches him out of some locker-like container.  The Commando continues to get Ben’s heart rate up by belittling his daughter’s death.  Locke shows himself instead.  Saying that he has no conflict with the Freighters…and neither do the people on the boat…and he wants him to put his knife down so they can talk.  But the Commando doesn’t believe he wants to talk.  Out of nowhere Ben goes crazy stabbing him in the neck.  Locke gets upset because Ben just killed everyone on the boat…and Ben says, “so?”  True bi-polar psychopath.  One-minute calm and talking to Jack. the next he’s stabbing people in the neck and killing innocents.

Jump for Love

Faraday talks to Charlotte and she says she wants to stay.  Faraday says if she doesn’t come now, her staying on the island could be forever.  Charlotte is apparently still looking for where she was born.  She kisses him on the cheek and they part ways.  BORN?!?  WTF?!?

Juliet is not coming on the boat.  And she says she’ll be here when Faraday gets back…he just plays along…but you can tell he’s not sure about getting back.  Juliet looks on at him…knowingly worried.  Why can’t they squeeze one more?  And where’s Rose and Bernard?

On the freighter Desmond has an idea.  He tries to cut a wire…but Jin stops him.  He shows him that the wire won’t work.  They have a quarter tank left.  And Michael says if they can’t deactivate the bomb they better get everyone off the boat.

The helicopter is coming into a landing as the fuel drops quickly.  Sayid wants to know what’s wrong…Frank wants them to look outside to see if they see anything.  There’s a hole where a bullet pierced the tank.  Jack says they must get to the boat...the island has no fuel…its useless…. they have to throw everything not bulleted down out the window.  They start throwing literally everything out.  Frank wants to be 200 pounds lighter…Sawyer grabs Kate…whispers in her ear and kisses her after she asks why he’s telling her this.  After they finish kissing…Sawyer says, “Just do it Freckles” and then jumps out the helicopter…. He swims to surface…. Sawyer swims back towards the island and a tear runs down Kate’s cheek .  He’s so awesome.  He saves lives without thinking about himself.  Jack is our hero, but he’s so selfish.  He would have NEVER thrown himself out the side of the helicopter.  Am I right?

Heaven is a Place on Earth

In the future, Sayid knocks on some guy’s car window and then shoots him dead…after he asked for the time.  Sayid then walks up the stairs to see Hurley.  Sayid says he isn’t visiting…he wants Hurley to come with him.  Why would Hurley go with him?

Bentham committed suicide apparently.  Hurley asks why Sayid is calling him Bentham.  Hurley wants to know if they are going back to the island.  And Sayid says that Hurley is just going to a safe place.  Hmmm…seriously, Bentham committed suicide?  And I still have no idea who he is.  Am I that blind?  Do you guys already know?  I love this show!!!  Always leaves me guessing.  Even while I write this blog and watch the show.

Hurley makes a move on the chessboard and says “Checkmate Mr. Ecko.”  Mr. Ecko!!!  I have been curious about his role in this whole island thing for weeks now…as loose ends are tied up, I want to know his whole connection.  Beyond what we already know…clearly.

Back near the island, Frank steers the helicopter…and Jack says as soon as they get to the boat they’ll go back for Sawyer.  Kate seems less than relieved.  She knows they won’t go back for him.   Hurley spots the boat.  Frank goes in for a landing.  Hmmm…nothing is easy.  How does it end up just being the six?  We’re missing Sun and Aaron.

At the Orchid station (aka Greenhouse station), the Commando slowly dies and Ben just watches.  Locke wants Ben to help him save the Commando.  Locke wants to save the people.  The Commando says that wherever Ben goes Widmore will find him…and Ben says not if I find him first.  The commando dies….ominous…creepy…very lost like.

On the boat, the red light clicks…and Michael says Desmond and Jin must get everyone off the boat.  They have five minutes.  Jin commits to staying…Michael sprays the bomb.  Desmond runs upstairs….he grabs for life jackets and sees the helicopter coming in.   Desmond screams that they can’t land….and he tries to get them to go back.  But they land anyway….Jack hears him telling them to turn around.  Doesn’t matter…no fuel…no helicopter…

Frank is trying to get the team to work together to patch the fuel holes.  Desmond pitches in.  Sun wants to go get Jin.  Kate insists that she goes for Jin and Sun gets on the chopper. But too late...time to go...everyone must get on the chopper that's on deck.  No time to get Jin.

Downstairs, Michael insists that Jin saves Sun and their unborn child.  Jin thanks Michael and runs to them.  Jin runs toward the helicopter…he almost makes it, but he’s literally 2 minutes too late.  Sun screams for him.  She wants Frank to land and get him, but he doesn’t have enough fuel.

Christian appears in the explosives room and says Michael is done now…and the boat blows up.  Jin was on it.   Michael was on the boat.  It’s done for them.  So sad…then a commercial for Batman the Dark knight…and Heath Ledger is dead…so my tears runneth over….some kind of timing this show has.  I swear…so sad.

Reality Bites

Lost-5.28-4.jpg

The helicopter circles the explosion and Jack gets so sad.  And Sayid holds Sun back.  Jack explains that Jin is gone.  Everyone is so depressed…clearly, Jin is a great guy.  Excuse me…was. (Huge tear).  Jack says they should be flown back to the island.  Sun continues to scream for Jin.

In London, Sun answers her phone.  She says she’s just finishing a bit of business.  She sees Charles Widmore coming out of the restaurant.  She walks up to him.  She introduces herself with her father’s last name and as an associate of her father’s company.  Widmore plays along as a business friend.  She says that she can’t believe he’ll pretend to not know who she is.  They both have common interests…when he is ready to discuss this she should call him.   He asks why she would want to help him…she simply walks away…Help Him!?!?  Why?  He’s the reason Jin is dead.

Locke wants to know why Ben killed the commando.  Ben says he wasn’t thinking straight.  “Good command decisions get jarred by bad emotions.”  Amen to that brother.  Look at the state of our world right now.  Locke asks what Ben is doing when he shuts the hatch and pushes a button.  They both duck and Ben says he should change…into what?

At the beach Juliet sits there and Sawyer swims back.  He comes up with his particular sense of humor.  Not really explaining where he’s been…let’s remember, they haven’t seen each other in ages.  He just goes for the rum Juliet has been drinking.  He wants to know what she’s celebrating…and she says she’ not celebrating…and they both see the smoke in the yonder…and he wants to know if that was their boat.  Sawyer is clearly upset…thinking that all his friends from the helicopter are dead.  Geez….this show is a sad one tonight.

Candle in the Wind

Ben puts on a coat…they are going somewhere cold?  Locke asks where his coat is.  Ben says Locke isn’t going…because Ben must do it.  He must suffer the consequences.  Who ever moves the island can’t come back.  Locke should go up the elevator and go to Richard 2 miles east of the Orchid.  Ben says goodbye and apologizes for making Locke’s life so miserable. He tried to kill Locke so that’s the understatement of the century.  Ben tells Locke he’ll find his way…he always does.

Locke goes into the jungle to find the Others.  Richard greets him happily as the Others look on.  And Richard says welcome home…Richard…as creepy as ever…yet surprisingly appealing.  Not sexually…just as a mystery.

Ben crawls down through the blown up site.  Suddenly it gets icy.  And there is a giant sprocket.  He chips the ice away and starts to turn it.  Suddenly light starts pouring out of it.  As he turns it, we see the outside world.  A bright light is shining on almost all of the characters faces.  Finally, it shines over Jack’s face.  As the helicopter is going to land…one minute the island is there…the next the light…and the island is gone.

The helicopter doesn’t have enough fuel and it starts to crash.  Everyone puts on lifejackets.  And Sayid throws a life boat out the window for them to swim to post crash.  The helicopter goes down…

Rescue Me

Helicopter underwater…Jack and Oceanic 6…alive (obviously).  Frank…alive.  Desmond…kinda comatose.  NOT DESMOND.  I love Desmond.  On the lifeboat, Jack gives Desmond CPR on the life raft.  Desmond comes back.  TFG.  My own abbreviation…take what you want from it.

Kate sleeps at her place in the future…she is woken and the phone rings.  I cannot understand what they are saying.  There’s a clicking sound.  She hears a door open in her house…and she runs to her bureau for her glock (my watching mates know their handguns apparently).  She points the gun at someone touching Aaron…it’s Claire.  And Kate freaks out at seeing her.  Claire tells Kate not bring him back.  And Kate wakes up…she goes to Aaron’s room to find him sleeping soundly.  She cries and apologizes to a sleeping Aaron.  So she was contemplating returning, eh?

On the lifeboat, Kate holds Aaron in her arms and Hurley asks if he’s okay.  Hurley says he can’t believe Locke moved the island.  Jack refuses to believe it.  Hurley challenges Jack by saying one minute it was there and the next it was gone.  And if Jack has another explanation he’d love to hear it.  You go Hurley.

A light is in the distance.  Frank says there is a boat out there.  Sayid and Frank call out to it. Jack seems apprehensive to call to it.  Jack says they are going to have to lie about all of it. Kate doesn’t want to do it.  She doesn’t think they can pull it off.  And Jack says they are protecting their friends on the island…and he’ll do all the talking.  THE BOAT IS PENNY”S BOAT.  Desmond freaks out in happiness.  He climbs up the side of the ship and they greet each other.  Huge kiss and happiness.  YAY!!!

She found them from Charlie’s phone call…she has a tracking station.  Desmond says he loves her and he’ll never leave her again.  Desmond introduces all of them to Penny.  Jack shakes her hand.  And he gets serious right away saying they need to talk.  Sayid looks on disapprovingly.

The Times are a Changin’

A week later, Hurley asks where they are going.  Sayid tells him and Hurley asks why they are doing it….and Sayid says its only the way to keep everyone on the island safe.  Desmond asks if Jack’s sure about this…and Jack asks if Desmond is sure.  And he is - as long as he has Penny.  And Jack tells Desmond that he’ll see him in another life.  And Desmond says I guess you will...So sad…they met running up those stadium stairs long ago.  Each searching for something…  Frank is sticking with Desmond on Penny’s boat…so its up to the Oceanic 6 to steer themselves to shore.

Lost-5.28-2.jpg

Jack gets the group together and onto a life raft.  They are sailing on a life raft to make it convincing.  And they paddle to an island…the villagers run to them. And they are finally safe…kinda.

In the future,  Jack drives with crazy loud music in his crappy SUV.  Name that tune anyone….he’s back at the funeral parlor from last season.   Is it Ben’s funeral home?  I still don’t know.  I thought for sure that it was Locke’s funeral last season, but this season definitely put doubt into my mind.

Jack is now literally breaking into the funeral home…drunk as a skunk in the middle of the night.  And he goes to the coffin.   Jack looks down and someone says “Hello Jack.”   So I’m wrong its not Ben is not Jeremy Bentham.  It’s someone else.  Who could it be?  They better tell me tonight…I gots to know people.

Ben asks if Jack if “he” told him that Ben had left the island.  Jack says he heard, and that this same “he” told Kate.   Then he reveals that after Jack left the island some very bad things happened…and its all Jack’s fault.  If he hadn’t left, none of this would have happened.

Now he has to come back.  Ben says he heard that Jack’s been flying on passenger planes hoping to crash.  Ben tells Jack that the island won’t let him come alone.  All 6 have to come back.  Jack gives reasons why they can’t all return together.  Ben has some ideas for how they all can to it together.  And he says “we’re going to have to bring him too….”   Who the F is it…it’s John Locke...WTF.  OMG.  How could I have missed that?  I cannot believe this…not as crazy as when we saw that last years final episode was all in the future…but they have me hooked for more answers.

Final Thoughts

Alright ladies and gents.  I want to know what happened to everyone.  Rose and Bernard still on the island?!?  People on the raft…did they go with the island or are they still floating in the ocean?  Where did the island get moved to?!?  The future…with that time machine?

Clearly I have more questions than anyone needs to hear.  But let’s have some conspiracy theories.  I look forward to hearing them.  Until we meet again, you have been a great group, and I’ll miss our weekly chats terribly.  I will check the message board again very soon.

Well guys, what a great finale! LOVED the Penny/Desmond moment. Loved Sawyer being a hero. Liked Walt is back. Hmmm, what is that Charlote borned in the Island stuff? Got me by surprise. Broke my heart the Sun/Jin thing. I still hope he maybe got under the water during the explosion and could swim to the island. And Ben... what is he up to? Trying the 06 go back, playing the "good guy" who wants to save the losties that are still on the Island? hmmm, He's Ben and I don't trust him. He has his own agenda. And still don't know if Claire is dead or alive! Is she a ghost? Or just a Kate's allucination? And Sun with Widmore? Is him the person she blames for Jin's death? Is she planning a revenge? And so many time 'til next season! Well, see you guys and Shanna!

Great 2 hr. season ending. Still alot of unanswered questions. I agree, Sawyer is great. Sexy to look at too. And Hurley playing Chess with Mr. Echo!!!!! I didn't get that at all. Is he seeing more ghosts?? I feel bad for Sun. Poor Jin. But we don't know if he is really dead. Lets hope he made it. And I hope Sun gets Charles Widmore's ass. She has something up her sleeve. She won't let him get away with anything. She's out for REVENGE. And I love Hurley. He's the best. I'm happy for Desmond and Penny. That was a tear jerker. I hope they stay safe. I had no idea that was John in the coffin. I was just as shocked as everyone else. And finally, where is Rose and Bernard. And what happens to everyone else on the Island. I can't believe Ben made it disappear. How did John Locke die. I can't wait till January 09. I'm just wishing my life here away. See you guys and Shanna soon. Great column Shanna.
