TV Recap: Desperate Housewives Season Finale

hospital.jpgPull up some couch ladies; it’s time for two hours (and according to the show: two days) of blissful Wisteria hysteria. This is going to be a long one. So, last week foreshadowed some legal trouble for Lynette. Just as she’s making waffles for the less-than-deserving Kayla, Child Protective Services shows up to investigate Kayla’s abuse claim. They even have the videotape from the mall.

Susan and Mike debate about baby names and finally settle on Connor… for now.  Mike finds out that his beloved grandfather Maynard has just died, and he wants to name the baby after him. Susan is horrified, and so are all the girls when they come visit. Surely there must be a solution so this kid is able to survive the playground.

Gaby is getting some wiring done… but the wirer is really in on the sting. He is there to place bugs in the house to catch Ellie this week when she gets a big delivery. Ellie comes home and catches them in her room and Gaby throws him on the bed and tries to play things off as if they’re having an affair. Later she tries to play it off, but Ellie seems suspicious. No more nicey-nicey.

Wayne comes into Katherine’s house and asks where Dylan’s big scar on her arm went. He’s a little drunk. Luckily, Lee and Bob pop over and she’s off the hook. The big event of the show comes courtesy of these two, who are having their commitment ceremony. They ask Katherine to be the caterer.

The psychiatrist visits the Scavos to talk about the current situation. Kayla eavesdrops and goes into the bathroom and picks up a curling iron. We can only assume she’s about to burn herself. Good grief! This child has some serious mental issues. Things are not looking good for Lynette.

shootingrange.jpgKatherine and Bree head to the shooting range for party planning. When K heads home her door is open already and she goes for her gun. It’s just Adam. Dylan told him that Wayne is back and he wants to protect them and take Dylan on a trip.

Orson tries to offer “peace” to Bree at church, and she lashes out and says, “I reject your peace!” And then tells the Reverend not to give him peace either! They have lunch later and Bree sees Orson walk in and asks the Reverend to take her hand. The ploy works, and he leaves, but Bree seems to have a bigger problem now—is the holy man hitting on her?

Lynette comes home and gets arrested for Kayla having a burn mark on her arm. Kayla of course is watching from the window upstairs as Lynette gets cuffed in front of her kids. Tom visits Lynette in jail and she tells him he needs to do something to stop this. It’s about time. He needs to support her and quit being fooled by that little devil.

The Reverend drives Bree home and makes a move on her! What kind of Reverend is this? Ha! He is forceful and she whacks him with the Bible to get away. He gets angry and starts yelling in another language. At church, the Reverend plans to give a sermon that effectively trashes Bree. Orson goes in to stick up for her and their argument is broadcast over the microphone system. Bree runs in and finds Orson out cold on the floor. He goes to the hospital and she stops to check on him. A sign that she’s softening up a little?

Susan still can’t get over the name. She tries to get the nurse to change it without Mike. The woman in charge is named Vanessa, and she’s unsympathetic, but then she heads out and Griselda comes in to cover for her. Susan plays up the fact that it must have been tough on the playground. Yeah… no kidding.

Ellie tries to give Gaby a speech about how bad decisions (like cheating) ruin peoples lives. She even starts crying as the police show up. Gaby caves in and gives her a hug and tells her to run out the back.

kayla.jpgTom finishes talking to the psychiatrist and goes in to talk to Kayla. He tells her that they can’t all live in the same house anymore. She thinks Lynette will have to live somewhere else, but Tom says she will. Panicking, she confesses that she lied about everything. Tom looks shocked. She asks if she can stay now and he tells her no—what she did was horrible. Fine, she says she’ll keep lying if she can’t stay. Luckily he didn’t turn off his cell phone and the psychiatrist was on the phone the whole time… it’s as good as a taped confession. Wow, Tom, impressive.

At Dylan’s concert Adam and Katherine make plans. He gets up for the intermission and runs into Wayne, who knocks him out with a tire iron when he tries to help him change a flat. Wayne drags him to some sort of warehouse to interrogate him and wants to know where his daughter is. Adam didn’t even know who he was.

A nurse comes in with balloons that say “Bon Voyage Connor.” Susan tries to pop them all but Mike sees the last one. She has to confess that she went to change it, and he tells her all the great things about his grandfather. They’re going to change it back.

Finally, Tom stands up for Lynette. The grandparents come for Kayla. Tom tells her he’ll visit all the time. Lynette tells her she’s sorry and Kayla rejects it. Tom is clearly upset and goes back inside. Kayla pounds on the back window and cries as they pull off. Good riddance. I hope that’s the last of her.

THE NEXT MORNING

It’s been 15 years since Katherine has been in a police station. In the flashback she’s full of bruises and it’s not the first time. The female cop says that because Wayne’s a patrolman and has a lot of friends, the paperwork will get “lost “again and again. It’s no use. She should just get all her money and her daughter and run. She went somewhere she thought she was safe—Aunt Lily’s.

Back in real time, she’s reporting Adam missing. She tells the officer she thinks it’s Wayne, but he doesn’t buy it—they’re friends. He claims he’ll look into it. I call BS. She goes home and starts packing and tells Dylan to pack. Dylan doesn’t understand why she should be afraid and the truth comes out… but we don’t know what that is yet… probably something about her real parents. Either way, she takes off.

The girls are playing poker and wondering about Katherine. Lynette thinks she’s aloof. Bree defends her, and then she shows up to tell her she can’t cater but she has to leave. Why? Can’t tell her. Now the girls have to help pull off the reception.

gabymoney.jpgGaby is in charge of wrapping wedding favors. Carlos tells her all the credit cars are maxed out. She says she shops when she’s mad. Frustrated he gets up and claims, “I’m going to go read porn—in Braille.” Ha! Ellie calls her and wants her teddy bear. Gaby decides to open it up and looks shocked. What’s in there? More drugs? Nope, money: More than a hundred grand. Ellie calls Gaby about the bear again. Gaby tries to strike a deal. She gets nasty on the phone and threatens to throw acid in her face if any is missing. She shows up and Carlos senses her. The police are outside and the three of them get in a fight over the duffel bag. Ellie takes off again.

tussle.jpgBob and Lee fight over what kind of ice sculpture to have. Orson shows up to help and Bree sends him away. She goes off to get the sculpture but her phone dies and she gets a flat. The cherub is starting to melt. She starts pushing it up the street in a stroller, but pieces start breaking off. Orson pulls up and she looks relieved this time. She’s a hot mess, and so is the sculpture!

Tom tells Lee to stand up for himself. So when he finds the sculpture he calls off the ceremony! Lynette sits them down and tells them to ignore Tom’s advice. Tom gives them an impassioned speech about forgetting the little stuff and being able to handle the “big” stuff like cancer and tornadoes and kids. He tells him they need to decide if the other person is worth going through all that. I think that was his small way of apologizing to her, and really, it was the first time he seemed to be on her side in the past few weeks. Finally, there’s hope for healing.

wayne.jpgWayne has totally beaten up Adam, and he thinks he’s dead—so he leaves. Adam is not quite done for though, and even though he’s battered and bloody, he still manages to escape and throw a random guy out of a car and drive off—presumably to save Katherine. This should an interesting showdown.

Katherine can’t find Dylan, but she does find Wayne waiting for her at home. She runs to get the gun and he slams her hand in the drawer. He is going to kill her. Or, what if he kills Dylan… aka “the girl that leaves here with you.” Katherine tries to negotiate with him, but doesn’t seem to be getting far. All of a sudden Ellie comes in and grabs a knife—she needs a place to hide. Wayne wastes no time in shooting her dead. Wow.

Bree finds out Katherine hasn’t left yet, so she goes over to the house and gets yanked inside. The police looking for Ellie outside are oblivious. Now the catering duo is at gunpoint together. Gets yanked into the house and the police outside looking for Ellie don’t even notice. To stop Wayne from shooting Bree, Katherine confesses. Finally, the truth comes out.

After she left him he eventually showed up when the sitter was there one night. Prepared to run again, she let him in and they fought. She cracked him on the head with a candlestick and he left. Lily offers her some scotch and she goes to sleep—only to wake up to Lily’s screaming. Upstairs, a bookcase has fallen on Dylan’s bed while she slept… and she’s dead. Aunt Lily told her she couldn’t tell the police because Wayne would convince them to pin it on her. So, Lily buried Dylan. Katherine found a Romanian orphan to replace her.

breeandk.jpgBoth ladies are crying now and Wayne is more upset. Just then Adam drives his car through the wedding reception and pulls in just as Wayne is about to fire. There is a crash and Adam walks in with the gun. He and Bree go to the kitchen to stop his bleeding and Katherine watches over Wayne. She is going to kill him. I know it… He starts telling her to call his buddies. They’ll take care of him. He’ll find her. He’ll make her pay. She’s bawling and she pulls the trigger. Bree and Adam come running from the other room. It’s done. Finally.

They walk outside and everyone is there. The ladies huddle and all find officers to proclaim Katherine’s innocence and make statements in her defense. Surprisingly, the chief says it was self defense and let’s her go. Really! What a shocker. Dylan comes back, and Katherine sees that she has the support of everyone.

FIVE YEARS LATER

Wait… what? We’re flashing forward now? Here’s a taste of what’s to come in the future. The girls are playing poker and everyone looks relatively the same except Gaby looks… terrible. Run down and no makeup… she must be a mom? Yes! Two kids in fact! Orson and Bree are still married; Lynette and Tom deal with the cops again, but this time it’s Porter and Preston who’ve turned into hellions; Dylan is getting married, and Susan has a new husband! Whoa! So it looks like some big changes are in store for our favorite ladies. And—still no sign of Edie. Hmm…

So that’s in until fall. What did everyone think? Were you surprised? Got any new predictions? What happens to Mike? Thanks again to the ladies who commented last week—let’s have some more!

At first my DH and I thought the man Susan was kissing was Katherine's husband. Kind of looked like him. But now I hear it's not. Anyone have any idea of who he is? Another recap I read had a name for him but not one that I recognized.

That was a great episode...until the last few minutes!! What is this "5 years later" crap?! To me, it completely ruined the show. I see two possiblities here: either in the fall the show will pick up where it left of in the "future" OR it will go back to where it was, and we will see how the future we saw came to be. Either way, I don't want to see it!

The cabinet did not fall on Dylan's bed, it looked like she climbed up it to try and get the doll that her mom placed on the top (and her dad had given her). Also it was thanks to Brie that she hurry told the other gals to show support for Catherine and to say to the cops that she had told them she was worried about her ex.

OMG!!! I can't believe the ending or should I say the flash forward. My question is how are they going to make Lynette's kids look 5 years older?

I think Edie is coming back with another child(ren) and remarried to her ex. If you remind her last scene she was leaving to go and finally be a mother to her son.

As for who Susan was kissing? OMG!!! Gale Harold some may remember him as Brain Kinney for "Queer as folks". I'm a big fan of that show and I don't see how he will fit into DH. We'll have to wait until next season to see.

I thought maybe it wasn't a season finale, but rather a series finale. Will they be back?

Anne said:

Yup...that was Gale Harold from Queer as Folk! I'm glad to see him on prime time. He was also a paramedic on Grey's Anatomy recently (he was the white supremist with the swastika tatoo on his stomach). Very interesting play bringing him into the show...and what happened to Mike?

This finale was so good...but the ending DID leave me a little frantic...I thought it was the series finale because of the 5 year flash "ahead".

Loved this episode and can't wait until the fall to see how it all ties together.
