Get to Know the Design Star Contestants

Last week I spent some time with all the Design Star finalists of season three. When the event started, host Clive Pearse introduced each of the finalists to the audience in New York City's Greeley Square.

Though these intros did nothing to test the designers' abilities, it was a very interesting way to see how the designers were with a microphone in hand when they had to engage an audience.

Here's the rundown (in the order they were introduced), with additional comments from my interviews:

designstarjennifer.jpg Jennifer: Very spunky. On marrying a British man, she told the audience: "I suggest everyone try it." Had a lot of energy but stumbled a bit on the mic, and didn't speak very eloquently, as a host must. Later on I joked to her that I had no idea how she and her husband stayed together after only one of them was chosen to be on the show. "I'm so lucky. My husband is the coolest guy ever and he just totally supports me," she said. But if she were the one staying home? "Oh it'd be totally different," she laughed. So why did Jennifer get chosen over her man? "I think it's maybe the bubbly personality versus his. He was all mad that I didn't make him get a haircut and a shave before it. Who knows, maybe it was secret sabotage!" Jennifer said their dream would be to have a show together.

designstartricia.jpgTricia: Well-spoken, though her vocabulary could use some work. Used the word "fun" about five times during one answer she gave, and then used the word "passion" just as often in another answer. However, she did engage the audience. She's in amazing shape as well. Plus, Tricia has three kids and talked about juggling work and home life, which is appealing to people.

designstarstephanie.jpgStephanie: Very perky. When she was introduced, the song "I Will Survive" played, and Stephanie danced her way onto the stage. Had tons of energy. Surprisingly enough, she said to me, "I like the attention, but not really. I would rather live on a farm with a bunch of cows." But the reason she wants to be on TV? "It's for me to get out there—little old me—I'm not that seasoned in the design field yet. It's hard to get your name out there, especially as a young designer." What's she say to Michael then? "That's just him. I'm amazing too." And lastly, "I saw some previews of me crying... so I'm realllly excited to show everyone how upset I was," she joked.

designstardpaul.jpgD. Paul: Funny! Started to talk a lot and Clive said he should just let D. Paul take over, thus leading to D. Paul speaking in a great English accent as he imitated Clive. (Clive shot back with an awesome American accent.) D. Paul described his style as "casual elegance with a little Cajun spice."

designstartracy.jpgTracy: Exuded the feeling of being a host. Tracy told the audience she's a triple threat and does design that's ten years ahead of the trend. She told me, "I've done everything else in my career, so it's time for this... I know what I'm doing... I think I have the most to offer... I feel like I have the most experience, bar none. I have the most to offer America." As for the type of show she'd like to have on HGTV? "I would love to do something more celebrity oriented that shows viewers really high end things and then teaches them how to knock them off and inspire them."

designstarmattlocke.jpgMatt Locke: I have to call him by his full name because it's too fun not to. Much smaller in person than I expected. Seemed a bit shy on the hosting front, though he was well-spoken.

designstarscottie.jpgScottie:Very upbeat. Described his style as giving "classical lines a modern interpretation." He's also an artist, and he said he studied at Oxford University. Clive must not have known that, as his eyes popped out of his head when he heard it.

designstarmichaelstribling.jpgMichael: Michael, of course, strutted on stage and did a fake catwalk. Aside from, "It's official. I'm amazing," he now says "It's ferosh," as in the abbreviated version of "ferocious." He had some trouble answering Clive's questions, but says he's great because he's only 23. Michael also admitted that the cast is annoyed with him by now. And, he told me that, according to blogs, America hates him. "I come across as cocky, but the reality is I'm joking 100%. I'm just a little Texas boy who happens to be passionate about his work." Plus, Michael says his work will speak for itself.  "I'm 23 years old and some of the projects I put on are million dollar projects. I just had a person put down a $300,000 deposit."

designstarmikeyv.jpgMikey V.: He's a cop by day and a designer in his free time. "If I could arrest for design, a lot of people would be in jail," he said. Mikey V. also said that he'd give up being a cop to be a designer "in a heartbeat." Very cute in person. I think I have a new crush!
