Will SAG Strike?
At midnight tonight, the deal between the Screen Actors Guild and the studio expires, and guess what? No new deal has been agreed on. So, does that mean the actors will strike?
Well, SAG president Alan Rosenberg said, "We have taken no steps to initiate a strike authorization vote by [our] members. Any talk about a strike or a management lockout is simply a distraction."
That's good, right? Not really. Midnight is only a few hours away, and unless a deal has been reached by then, there is no contract. And no contract means that actors can't work. Faaaaaabulous.
Luckily a lot of TV shows already filmed some fall episodes, so we'll still have something to watch if there is a strike (depending on how long it lasts - if it even happens). As for movies... well, no actors means no movies.
There's the chance that a temporary contract could be put in place to help avoid the strike, but that doesn't fix the fact that no long-term deal would exist.
Fingers crossed!
Update: Though no contract has been agreed upon, SAG is letting its members continue to work under their existing deal until further notice.

As a Husband married to a SAG MEMBER; our household only cares about one thing. Money- my wife is scared to death of a possible strike. Quite frankly it’s causing some strange arguments. The support system that she has is running thin due to cat fights between SAG and the Studios. The studios will always come out on top. That’s just the way it works. They finance everything; why wouldn’t they get the best deal. Personally, my family has gone thru enough. I would like to see my wife get more work; steady work, work that makes sense. I would also like to see the Studios grant our actors a better overall package- but they don’t have to…. The overnight shoots, time away from home, up front travel expenses, and utter confusion when casting, is very hard on or beloved tradesman and women. I would love to see my wife utilize her finance degree; however she was bitten by the acting bug. So please do what’s right, stop being greedy. In this world you will never get what you think your worth; that’s goes for every industry. Due to the new and future media outlets I understand why the contract is viewed as faulty or non-sufficient, however be careful; I’ve been seeing a lot of casting company looking for non-sag people. Hummm don’t beat the money horse to death. Something is better than nothing.
This entire scenario has become a ridiculous parody of itself. It's simply two spoiled brats fighting over the last few licks of cake batter left in the mixing bowl, while the once luscious cake itself grows stale on the counter.
SAG's Hollywood leadership needs to grow up, wake up and smell the decaying carcass of the US economy before it's too late for them, and for the rest of us. It's completely hypocritical for the likes of Sean Penn, Jack Nicholson or Ben Stiller to hold sway with regards to BASE pay for actors when none of those esteemed gentleman has worked for scale in the past ten years, nor ever will again. How DARE they support a "Vote No" campaign that will have NO IMPACT whatsoever on them personally? How egotistical are these people?
There is such a thing as TIMING -- something I stupidly assumed actors knew about -- and this just is NOT the right time for this kind of posturing. This is people's livelihoods we're talking about here, NOT some celebrity cause celebre. It's easy to get on your high horse about minimum pay when you make more in one year than most SAG members will make in a lifetime. It's gross that these guys live in a LA-LA-LAnd bubble in which standing up for a principle requires absolutely no personal sacrifice or cost on their parts. Others must pay for Sean Penn to stand up for what he believes in. And Jack Nicholson certainly won't miss a Lakers game as a result of lost work. And Ben Stiller, well he'll simply make his Dodgeball sequel a few months later, after hundreds more people lose their homes. Oh well, there's plenty more film technicians and auxiliary crew ready to be used up and spit out by this narcissistic system. Oops, I forgot, it's only the actors that matter.
