Access Hollywood's Billy Bush is hosting the newest reality show, Grease: You're The One That I Want every Sunday night. Each week, he'll give us a behind-the-scenes look at the judges' quest for the perfect Danny and Sandy to star in the musical version on Broadway this summer.
A stunner last night that has me confused. For the past several weeks, David Ian has praised Chad by saying he's got the sex appeal and swagger that could sell him millions of tickets.
Last night, even though Austin received the lowest number of votes, he was saved over Chad by the panel. The reason given by Kathleen Marshall was that he was more of a triple threat (a better prospect when considering singing, dancing and acting combined).
I like Austin a lot, but to me its more about the 'x factor' that Danny Zuko has loads of. More than anyone in the competition, Chad has that. He's a stud. I think David may have wanted to fight a little harder for his ticket salesman.
Finally, I shed my first tears on stage... thankfully the show had gone off the air minutes before. My eight-year-old daughter, who has a sweet crush on Chad, came up on stage in tears. Chad picked her up in his arms and told her it was okay. That he'd be fine. Her tears dried up, and mine began. He's my daughter's first crush, and I approve.

Crumm-believable! Max Crumm went from boy to man last night when he blasted out "Hard to Handle." He was all over Ashley and Kathleen as Danny Zuko would have surely been. It was great and he was the judges' pick across the board.
Last week, Laura Osnes went from sweet girl to hot woman when she sang Peggy Lee's "Fever"... SHE was the judges' pick across the board.
Have Max and Laura spent much time together during the week to see what kind of chemistry burns between them? They might want to. But on that note, am I the only one who picked up on the huge political move by Derek?

First of all, I was shocked when I read Chad's name in the bottom four. Nobody expected that. But last night was all about shining stars and nobody shone brighter than Laura Oznes. Holy mackerel she looked gorgeous in that black evening gown and she nailed Peggy Lee's "Fever" to perfection... and I imagine broke hearts in the process.
Backstage before the show, I got the chance to hang out and chat with Frankie Avalon... he is the nicest guy in the world. He told me stories about meeting Marilyn Monroe for the first time when he was a 21-year-old chart-topper and having his first martini in the home of producer RJ Wagner.
A little red wine and some homemade Italian cooking (he's a top chef) is what keeps him looking as studly as he did in Grease the movie.
The Oscars were huge last night, and I applaud NBC for having the guts to air a new, live episode of Grease.

There was true shock backstage after the show as it sank in that Juliana had gotten the axe. Her voice is strong and her "goody-goody" quality is very reminiscent of Sandy. It proves how tough this competition will be.
The American Idol kids have moved in to the stage next to ours, so we share a few hallways. In fact, Randy Jackson's dressing room is directly across the hall from mine.
There is a little bit of feeling out that's going on. Each show checking the other out... the contestants interested in each other but none wanting to show it. No need for ANY hostility to be bred between the two shows, even though for sure, they are goliath and we are the little engine that could.
Next week, the legendary Frankie Avalon will be on hand... "Beauty School Dropout" nearly 30 years later??? Oh my, hold on.
See you then.

I have realized that Grease has a small but passionate audience. Its a boutique hit. My hope was that this show would help re-ignite Broadway, but in fact, it has taken the faithful and brought them great satisfaction.
Having Andrew Lloyd Webber on the show was fantastic. That man could very well be the most successful man in any field.
Amongst the non-performers, there were as many British people on the stage last night as American, with Denise, David and Andrew joining Kathleen, Jim and me. All for the most American of productions -- Grease. The British have come!! Its been a fun cross-cultural experience for me personally. They are all wild and fun.

The first live show went well, I thought. Everybody was a little nervous as there were many elements that had to come together in the moment. The kids were outstanding. In fact, they blew me away.
Bringing back the very "green" Matt Nolan and the young and beautiful Ashley Anderson, was a big surprise to all, although I'm not totally sure they'll make it past this week. That is to say, the panel may have had it right the first time with the final 12.

I have mixed emotions right now. I am thrilled that NBC picked up additional episodes and that they love the show. I am bitter that for the last two weeks we have been hurt by championship football. Two awesome games featuring the New England Patriots (I was even at one of them -- the shame), have hurt the momentum a little. But last night's episode three was bigger than last week and grew throughout the hour.
The show is about to become one of the best on TV because next week we're live with 12 kids in a do-or-die environment with massive productions to put on every Sunday night. It's exciting. I sort of feel like Ed Sullivan feeding fun to people.

Last night we chose the final 12, and I'm so glad because I don't have to hold on to that secret anymore. Two eliminations in a 60-minute episode, packed tight with great dance instruction, vocal action and tension -- people loved it.
Finally, I remember when we filmed the "showcase" in front of Marilu Henner, Barry Bostwick (the original Danny Zuko on stage) and Jeff Conaway from the movie... Kanicki was in the house. It was surreal. Shaking hands and chatting with each of them really reminded me how rich this material is. To those who hold Grease close to their hearts, our LIVE shows will do it justice. Get very excited.
That's all for now.

The New York auditions for Grease were solid on the air, but I wasn't there. I signed onto the show just in time for the Los Angeles auditions which were filmed third in sequence although they aired first on the air.
My impression was that the storylines were great. The couple whose very relationship was put to the test at the end proved that the relationship was actually built upon this Danny and Sandy fairytale.
Thankfully my wife and I aren't based upon being Sonny and Cher.
For Grease'lovers, it's about to get really good. This week's upcoming episode will look and feel like nothing else on TV. There is so much great action... singing and dancing and two elimination rounds that will ultimately lead to the final 12.
I am admitting that, so far, the show does not feel entirely original as there are other performance shows with auditions featuring the good, the bad and the ugly.
I am very excited and I know you will love this show. Remember, at the end of it all, our winners will have to perform, live on Broadway, eight shows per week. This show has more on the line than any other.
Sincerely,
Grease Lightning

Last night's debut of Grease: You're The One That I Want was great. Women loved it. In fact, women in the 18-34 demographic made it their #1 show. I am very excited.

I hope you enjoyed my little tour of Chicago's north end, home to a huge Polish population, because that is where Grease began. Grease co-creator, Jim Jacobs (the curmudgeonly judge) grew up there and attended Taft High School. That community and school was the inspiration for Grease. Jim was a greaser, and his cousin was the guy who was the inspiration for Danny Zuko. In the movie, Sandy Olson was the beloved lead. In the musical before it, Sandy Dumbrowski was her name and Danny Zukowski her man.
Jim and I had lunch with his old grade school girlfriend who was the inspiration for the Patti Simcox characte. She's still that perfectly cute and put together girl -- now 63. We ate at Superdawg, the drive-in that all the kids went to back in that day. Watching Jim flip through their yearbook together was cute. He still has a crush on her. Only now, so do I.
This show gets even better, and when the live shows begin on January 28th, people will be faced with the best thing on TV. Get ready for some awesome production numbers that will get you up on your feet dancing around like crazy.
