E_SYTCDCatDeeley_250.jpg"The Rose" by Bette Midler. Spotlight on Chelsie in a white dress swaying and waving her arms in a vaguely contemporary fashion. The lights come up on Katee and Courtney, similarly attired and moving in sync. The men come out and pair off with the women. A lot of languid movement and lifts and splits as one of the cheesiest songs of all time builds to a crescendo. And yet, I didn't hate it. I didn't like it much either, but at least it never made me want to punch anything.

Cat comes out in a metallic blue shower curtain to tell us that Mandy Moore choreographed the routine. After introducing the judges, Cat tells us that after Nigel plugged the Declare Yourself website last week, online voting registration went up "four hundred percent!" Since percentages are useless without actual figures, this doesn't mean a whole lot. I choose to believe that one person registered before Nigel made his pitch, and then after he made his pitch, four people registered.

After we watch the top eight strut their stuff, Cat comes out to talk some stuff about how it gets harder and harder each week to pick favorites. Not for me! Week in, week out, it's Cat! Joining Mary and Nigel today at the judging table is Toni "Oh Mickey You're So Fine You're So Fine You Blow My Mind Hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!" Basil. Cat awesomely asks, "Yeah, we all know you did 'Mickey,' what have you been up to lately?" With "lately" encompassing twenty-six years. But don't you worry about Toni Basil: she's working with Bette Midler and Tina Turner. Toni Basil be doing just fine.

Will and Courtney are doing hip-hop and samba this week. Jean-Marc Genereux and France are teaching them the samba, which is a "feast for the hips," Jean-Marc tells us, and he busts out some pro wrestling moves to help Will loosen up his hips.

They dance to Che' Nelle's "I Fell In Love With The DJ," Courtney in a by-now-trademarked partial dress, this one yellowy and fringey, Will in black, a sleeveless sheer shirt, which is the missing link between "shirtless" and "shirt." It looks good to me -- synced footwork, good energy, good chemistry. Courtney stretches out on Will's shoulder and he spins around, hands-free.

While all the dancing is fun and dandy at times on So You Think You Can Dance, I thought that I would switch it up a bit and focus more on the "exciting" news that happened in this week on the show.

JessicaSYTYCD.JPGSHOCKER ONE:

First and foremost, religious viewers of the show (like myself) were thrown a curveball when Jessica King, a contestant on the show and Will Wingfield's partner, decided to bow out of the competition due to an injury.

OMG. I know.

I was a tad suspicious of her decision to leave, because she hasn't been a favorite of the judges and her lack of talent was visible among viewers, as well as the judges (duh.)

Poor Jessica was also the subject of a lot of controversey regarding her position on the show, because the judges considered her partner Will to be one of the better contestants, and Nigel Lythgoe even said that Will was one of the top five dancers on the show ever!

Poor Jessica.

soyouthinkyoucandancethayne.jpgThe ubiquitous Ne-Yo provides the music for the opening number, featuring the gang in red satin jackets with glow in the dark piping on the sleeves, which is used to squiggly effect when the lights go out. The lights come back on for some synchronized hip-hopping. Loosley synchronized anyway, and a little bit of breaking from Gev. Lights out, and the piping actually blinks on and off. Choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon, and it didn't bore me to death!

Cat comes out to tell us that the dancers left after tonight get to go on tour, so this might possibly be the hardest cut at all for our little movers. Nigel lets us know that the Philip Shebib/Robert Moraine battle is going to happen on the finale, as if we needed any more reason to tune in. If they want to seal the deal, they should promise not to have any more lame fakeouts like last year's threatened Nigel/Cat dance.

The first two couples come out on stage: Katee and Joshua, and Comfort and Thayne. Comfort and Thayne did hip-hop and contemporary, and Nigel predicted they'd be in the bottom three. Mia was harsh on Comfort and nice to Thayne. Meanwhile, Katee and Joshua did a Viennese waltz (to a piece by noted composers Goo Goo Dolls) and the show's first Bollywood routine. The judges loved them, and apparently no one else is sick of the hot tamale train yet. And -- as predicted, Comfort and Thayne are in the bottom three while Katee and Joshua are safe. Mia calls it inevitable, and America got it right, and America's trying to tell them something that they're not hearing. "I don't feel that either one of you has reached their highest potential," she says, adding that she hopes that next step because she wants them to stay.

TOP12_D2Y6067.jpgAlright folks, it's down to the Top 12 contestants on So You Think You Can Dance. I must apologize for not blogging about the show recently, I just haven't had the time the past two Wednesday's to inform you loyal viewers.

I'll just give a qick recap as to which contestants were already eliminated:

June 12: Rayven and Jamie

June 19: Susie and Marquis

June 26: Chelsea and Chris

July 3: Kourtni and Matt

However, I'm back and ready to give you the 411 on the remaining dancers and their routines - and each couple is dancing twice!

-----------------------------------------------

chelisemarksalsa_U1H9149.jpgDANCE 1 - Couple: Chelsie and Mark ; Dance Genre: Salsa

This pair have been nothing but impressive since the Top 20 started airing almost a month ago, and tonight wasn't any different. The way Chelsie and Mark moved their bodies was incredible and you can absolutely feel the chemistry between the couple. Next to Twitchington, they're my favorite couple!

Nigel: Great routine to open the show! Terrific opening! The footwork between the pair of you is terrific.

Mary: This was another rockin' number, and this one worked for me! Chelsie, you were phenomenal!

Mia: I wanna stab you, you're [Chelsie] so gorgeous. The routine was rockin'! I thought it was a great performance.

chelsiemarkbroadway_U1H9722.jpgDANCE 2 - Dance Genre: Broadway

Alright, they danced to to "I'm a Woman" from Smokey Joe's Cafe, a number that I danced to in a dance recital when I was about 11. And believe it or not, it was pretty reminiscent of my routine. Minus the sexiness, guy, and, oh yea, there were about ten other girls dancing with me. It was entertaining and sexy, just what it should be. Sorry, I got caught up in myself a bit.

Nigel: I was just in Vegas, and it was 110 degrees there, but it wasn't nearly as hot as this routine was! Terrific routine!

Mary: Was it sexy, bluesy? Yes it was, YES IT WAS!

Mia: It worked, I think it was a success. You guys told the story really well. But I feel that, Mark, it showed your lack of training and technique.

Last night, the remaining nine couples performed some pretty sick routines. But sadly, all good things must come to an end - at least for one couple.

Flo Rida started off the results show tonight. But results for those couples in the Bottom 3 came rather quickly.

First couple in the Bottom 3? Chelsea and Thayne - just like I predicted.

Then host Cat Deeley did something rather sneaky (and somewhat humorous). Before announcing who would join Chelsie and Thayne, couples Will and Jessica and Matt and Kourtni were asked to step forward. Of course one would be safe and the other would be forced to dance again. But, surprise! Both were safe!

Top18.jpgAlrighty folks! We're back for another night of Mary Murphy's laughing and Cat Deeley's not-so-fantastic outfits. Oh, and, ya know, those 18 dancers performing for us. But seriously, what was Cat wearing?! And what about Mary's outfit? Ugh. Don't they have stylists? If they do, fire 'em quickly.

Just as a reminder from last Thursday's elimination show: Rayven and Jamie were voted off, like I had predicted. (Mwahahaha). Sorry, I couldn't resist.

And FYI, I don't mean to get American Idol on all of you, but please, please, please don't forget to vote for your favorite dancers. I mean, it could be your vote that determines whether or not they make it to the next round. No pressure or anything.

Anyway, the show started off with a little pre-taped segment of the dancers explaining what they like and dislike about their partners. And it continued before each couple hit the stage. Yeaaaaa - no one said anything remotely interesting.

I won't waste anymore of your time. Let's get to the dancers and their performances, shall we?!

--------------------------------------------------

ChelseaThayne.jpgCouple: Thayne and Chelsea ; Dance Genre: Jazz

So apparently Thayne is a little superstitious and was knocking on wood left and right during rehearsals. Too bad that didn't do them any good when it came time to perform. Their costumes were a tad, dare I say, hideous? And the routine wasn't all that impressive. Don't get me wrong, they're talented, but my grandmother could have done that routine.

Mia: Great concept, wasn't executed at all. You weren't powerful enough. It was dumpy.

Mary: Well I hate to put a damper on the first number of the night, but I'm going to. I didn't really believe the chemistry this time.

Nigel: I agree, it wasn't real. I didn't believe it. I don't particularly like what you're wearing. (Maybe Nigel heard me. Weiiird.)

And so it begins! Tonight on So You Think You Can Dance, your Top 20 paired up and danced their little butts off in hopes to eventually win the competition. But of course, it wasn't a surprise that host Cat Deeley annoyed me from the start. Nigel Lythgoe just couldn't stop commenting on how gorgeous her legs are (gag) and she announced to, oh, a few million viewers how she spent an hour and a half in makeup.

But enough about my issues with her, let's get on to the competition, shall we?

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Couple: Jamie And Rayven (who reminds me of dancer Cheryl Burke, btw) ; Dance Genre: Hip-Hop

The two certainly made it a spicy opening, especially when Rayven pulled Jamie's jeans down revealing some baby blue colored tighty whities.

Nigel: What I'm frightened about a little bit, is, is that routine going to be memorable later on tonight?

Mary: Well, I hate to put a damper on the very first number of the year, but I'M NOT GOING TO, ALL RIGHT!

Dan: It wasn't quite there. There was no funk, no funk at all. You have to find a difference between what's light and funny and when you have to break it down.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Couple: Susie and Marquis ; Dance Genre: Smooth Waltz

Though a behind the scenes look at rehearsals didn't look too promising, the pair shaped up and pulled it together, ultimately dancing incredibly well together.

Nigel: The lift, I know you didn't get it quite right, but I'm not sure the audience picked up on it. Very well done! I hope people realize how good you both were in it.

Mary: You guys pulled it off! You did a great job!

Dan: I felt like I was watching an almost-perfect ending to a love story. It was sexy, romantic, it was smooth. I loved it.

Ah, another show where America can vote has returned to the airwaves with an all too familiar formula: an attractive, yet annoying host + 3 judges (a pro, a brunette and loud choreographer, and a Brit) + bad auditions + good auditions. Sound familiar? American Idol So You Think You Can Dance, America’s ORIGINAL dance competition is back for its fourth season! Yay!!!

While the opening first minute showed the winners from the past three seasons, host Cat Deeley proclaimed that this season will have the best dancers thus far, and even went as far as proclaiming that SYTYCD, which is how I’ll most often refer to the show from now on to save myself from carpal tunnel, is the show with “the most talent on television.” (I’m sorry, but does anyone else find Cat to be just a little bit obnoxious? And arrogant? AND a terrible dresser?)

Season Four auditions kicked off at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles and the night began with a confusing situation:
